Needle palm minimal protected http://s1.postimg.org/7dmic3kkb/001.jpg Sabal minor. Heat damaged, and cut off the nice big fronds it had, but crown appears ok and am sure will come back. Next year will just put barrel over it and no heat. http://s2.postimg.org/4rnmd1tl1/002.jpg Sabal Palmetto looks j...

This S. Palmetto, along with another Trachy about the sames size both are on the South side of the house where they had a lot of natural warming vs the one damaged that faces the West. Also have a S. Minor about 4/5 ft tall on south side and over protected it and it got heat damaged, but will come b...

There probably isn't a worst place for a palm like that than where it's at since it's in shade most of the time no matter the season and only gets direct sun late afternoon till sunset. I think it will be fine, just slower to recover there. If it does die, I'm making a road trip to San Antonio TX in...

That's not a Waggie Jim, It's a Windmill that had dried fronds, and some fungus so had to cut it back. It's been in the ground there for 3 seasons. Normally every winter we get some mild days and I open things up and let them breathe and I did with all my other palms except this one because I made s...

Pictures of what I was referring to about using fence posts, and PVC pipe to extend the outside support of any kind of hut or protection to higher limits. It's cheap and expandable. Steel fence posts driven into the ground with a fence post hammer/slide as close to the hut as you can get, then simpl...

Next winter....palm protection I'm going to try.
We're all looking for the best protection methods for our outdoor planted palms and each season we learn new ways to protect them. Want to share experience with one method I tried this winter and an idea for next winter. First, after seeing something like this posted by hardyjim in Iowa and not bein...

Ya never know.....crown/roots might still be alive. Had a Mexican Fan palm that was in 5 gallon bucket sunk into ground that got hammered by 9F temps and looked just like that. Left for dead until weather warmed up and low and behold a new spear pushed up. That palm is now 2 ft tall in new pot and o...

None of my enclosures are air tight either because I know heat can build up in them along with condensation. All but one of my protections barrels or cages can easily be removed or put back. Only my tallest Windmill stays buttoned up because it would be too much work to even take it down. Pulled the...

Any pic of that CIDP protected? I would agree it would be great to start out with a palm at least 8ft but I don't think most can afford that since if your bitten by the palm bug....have to have MANY! lol So true Scott, those CIDP's sure aren't cheap. Not sure if I would invest in experimenting with...

I can attest for the spear pull on smaller Trachy's I have one planted as a mail order seedling a few years ago and even though it's protected with root heat and christmas lights it always looks like a million bucks going into spring except......spear pulls. It always comes roaring back though getti...

Where is your beautiful queens palm, in the garage? Do you grow tropic palms from seed or mostly buy them in pots.. Rare and pricey stuff i see there. Thanks Both Queens over winter in garage and do fine there among other palms. I have almost zero luck with palms from seed other than Mexican fan pa...

Yes, road trip in the Spring. You can be in Dallas in a day. As a matter of fact wife and I are trying to put together a road trip to San Antonio. Have never really been to Texas before and buddy of mine goes to San Antonio a lot and tells me how great it is. Needless to say, I would drive my truck...

Silver dates with any size were hard to find but before I made my road trip I looked on Craigslist for the San Diego area and found a couple of hobbyists that grow and sell palms so visited their place at their house and filled up my truck. AMAZING selections and prices I went nuts. One guy only had...

Looks good-plenty more room around the kitchen table too..... The bathroom really works well for tropicals if you have some light n there... I had my Licuala over the sink in the kitchen and they seemed to loke it fine. My wife isn't all that happy with so many palms in the house this time of year....

I'll be anxious to see in the spring how yours did over wintering. I have 4 in pots, all bought when I did my road trip to San Diego. Very cheap to buy at box stores there. One of them is a Silver Date(larger) and the other large one is a regular CIDP both will stay in the pots. I picked up two smal...

Both cold hardy and tropical palm collection
Created a photo bucket album of my palm collection for the end of 2014 although since I did it this weekend I need to add another one to the list that came today a Yatay x Queen hybrid so that pic will be by itself. Some palms are in the ground protected, other potted ones are kept in garage. Tropic...

I'm sure in time I'll have to use the heat cable when in the ground palms here get too big to build cages around. Most though I installed a 6ft heat tape in the ground when I planted the palms. It's thermostat stays inside the enclosure so may never come on if thermocube does it's job, but at least ...

What kind of Sabal(s)? I had a larger Minor in the ground since spring...did well, but put 50 gallon barrel around it for this winter at least. Anxious to see how it fairs in the spring. Didn't think last winter could be beat as far as cold....I know it's early but we might just beat last years cold...
