Not that I've bought 100's of palms but seem to have much better luck buying from independents where palms were germinated and grew from seedlings in somewhat of a colder climate close to what I experience. Stuff from Steve Anderson has been rock solid, as well as Jungle Music. Just ordered from Chi...

After realizing the Mexican Fan Palm after 2 1/2 years in the ground was going to be a issue with building a ever taller cage for winter protection I was going to dig it up and move it 2 feet further away from where it's at. What a nightmare to dig up the root ball...so much so I gave up about 1/2 w...

From what I remember, the concern was what if they caught on fire how would they put it out.

I'm sure Hardy Jim knows more details since he lived in Iowa and closer to Des Moines than I do.

You can google Des Moines Palm trees and usually find the pics and the story.

I got the palm bug when I read the article about some very tall Windmill palms planted at a hotel in Des Moines, IA....... The palms didn't live I guess because the city wouldn't allow a permit to allow the hotel to protect them with heat, although they did construct some metal silo looking things w...

Well do keep an eye out for a Chinese Fan palm, even at Walmart. Couple of years ago a bunch of Walmarts had them here in Omaha. Nice 3/4 foot tall ones for $15 each. Those are the ones I planted in the ground. Or...keep them in over sized pots and just keep them in garage over the winter. They are ...

Minimum soil temps for planting cold hardy palms?

Anxious like everyone else in getting some cold hardy palms in the ground and was curious from any experts on here if there is a minimum soil temp before planting in the ground. Currently for my area and through the University of Nebraska soil temp is 38F I can be patient, but want new outdoor palms...

What size was it when you bought it, and how long has it been in the ground again?

What kind of heat did you give it as well?

Zabola, lowest true temp got down to -14F, although we had a lot of sub zero temps this winter. Coldest in 30 years. In reality, in years past it would rarely get to even zero around here so always questioned the 5B zone rating we had.

I've had zero success with Needles(3 so far), and didn't care for them much anyway. But the Trachys and now Sabals have proven their worth in over wintering in my area so going to focus on planting more this spring.
