If possible can you post a picture straight on? Also one from the front of the garage, but back enough to see some scale. Without seeing it at a different view I would go with three trachys. The only problem will be when they grow over the roof they might look weird. Thats why I want to see the othe...

Rubtherock, There was no transplant shock most likely because it was still on the cool side, that's My guess anyways. I plan on building a box over them like arcticpalm. Not sure what kind of heat I'm going to use yet or if I will cut the fronds totally off. The boxes will be to big if the fronds ar...

Very nice post as always Laas. Great display of the different washys over the years. Theres a better than average chance if you buy a 10+ foot tall washy from home depot down south it came from florida. I'm pretty sure I heard that filiferas rot out in florida for some reason, Don't quote me but all...

Cape Cod @ Marthas Vineyard Tree's
Hey everyone, Here's a few cool trees that I saw while walking around with my camera on vacation. Here's a 90+ year old S. Magnolia in perfect health in Yarmouth on Cape cod. This tree had several trunks but still very cool to come across around here! http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv62/Billma6-...

Well I sure am glad I put the heat cables in now! The local weather man stated it's the coldest June 1 thru July 15 EVER since records have been kept in Providence (1904). My electric bill is way less than last year since the a/c barely comes on, so I might as well spend it on my bananas :D Who know...

Wow that is red clay, I thought it was mulch at first glance! I know it sounds like a major pain but laaz is right about the drainage. That is most likely why people are telling you they can't survive. Washy roots are very rot prone if sitting in water. Since you have a tractor it might be your best...

Washys can be a bit finicky when they are moved/planted as you are finding out. I would cut the burnt frons off since they aren't going to come back anyways. The frons will drop down like the second picture when they have been on the tree for a while. I'm pretty sure they will start to brown on ther...

I agree with Jim, it's to late in the season for palms to establish after being dug up. All of those palms mentioned are great and it should be easy to find most of them. Don't forget about musa basjoo they should have huge ones for cheap that late in the season. You can cut them if they don't fit i...

Is there anyway you can post a picture? Without seeing it I would say transplant shock. How big where the roots when you planted it. If the roots here cut the palm is sending all the energy it has to the root system. I would want to see a picture but a mild root stimulator might help for the long ru...

There's a guy in Littlerock, Arkansas who has been growing one for many years. I'm not sure but he might be warmer there, but not by much. He cuts off all the leaves in Dec. and puts just a tarp over it. I think he uses flood lights if it gets cold. The leaves start growing back very rapidly in earl...

Needle Palm showing first signs of bloom!!!
Hello everyone, I just noticed today dispite all the cold and rainy weather we have had, a little bulge on the bottom of one of my needle palms. The other two aren't showing signs yet but they don't get as much sun, not like we have really had much. Here's a few pictures of them. http://i670.photobu...

Hello everone, With the June we have had so far I would say the heat cables are working well. They said on the tv that the last 20 out of 30 days have been cloudy/cool/ and rainy. What a crap start to the summer, it should be 90 right now. The bananas with the heat source keep growing though about a...

Hello Brandon, I would say in your climate you have lots of options. Do you ask about the hardiest palm because you don't want to offer much protection? If that is the case you could get away with needle palm with no troble and sabal minor in the right spot with proper care. Those two I'm sure you k...

New Banana Grove @ heat source
Hello everyone, I'm at it again! Another trip to Florida, This time to drive my grandmother and car home to save her 900 bucks on transport. Being that far south it's hard if not imposible not to bring things back. I was sure the haul would be limited when I saw all her things, but that didn't stop ...

Welcome to the site Eric. My opnion would be to get rid of some of the clay soil. Paul is right that they aren't picky about soil, but clay holds a bit of water so I'd think in a colder area it would be good to get rid of some of it. I would mix in a wheel barrow 1 bag play sand, than half well drai...

Thanks Stephen. They didn't cost all that much. There are so many places in Florida that are cheap, the expense is getting there and getting them back. The 3 big ones are Robustas. They are not as hardy as Filifera but that was all I could get. They grow faster than filifera from what I have read. I...

Thanks Jim. They were heavy but I think digging a million holes and mixing good sand/soil mixes/ cutting out sod was more of a pain that towing stuff around. Now it's time to enjoy!!! Almost time for fertilizer, I think the focus will be towards root growth rather than foliage. The more roots the be...

SPRING PLANTING IN MASSACHUSETTS!!!
Hello everyone, I thought I would share some picture's of my spring plantings. I decided this was going to be the year to plant the things I've wanted for years. Time to bring the South to the North! Nice job Jim!!! Looks like all your hard work paid off, which is always a nice thing to see. In your first picture did the banana's in the background stay out or did they come from the house? Regardless with some 80 degree days they'll take off nicely from that size. I'm kinda nervious to ask how yo...

It worked for me with a little yellowing on the tips. I Just say keep an eye on it as you go. You'll be able to tell if it's not happy. Like I said the only reason I tried it was I wanted more leaves and I didn't want to wait. The stuff I used was the miracle grow 20-20-20 mix. It was blue. I won't ...

My Trachy seeded from my enclosed it's second winter? It's first winter was unheated 5.6 degree low temp. I fertilized20-20 for the first 6 weeks after all but three leaves were still green. I grew 14 leaves that year . This winter it got to 14 for 3 hours inside the palm hut. 4 degrees out side wit...

Don't worry about over fertilizing hilashes. My 15 gal. windmill after 5.6 degrees no heat it's first winter in SE MA covered only had 3 good leaves + the 2-3 spere leaves. I then fertilized 20-20-20 for 6 weeks straight on heavy duty. It grew leaves almost as fast as the basjoo. Warm humid summer w...
