For some of these Yuccas, do you need to have the seed go through a slight freeze cycle before germination plantings? Many seeds still left on the Y. Filim. stalks, that are left out around here, seems to germinate in the Springtime. I'm curious if the Winter freeze is a necessary part of their cyc...

In your experiences with yuccas how many days can I expect them to take to germinate?

Seeds Planted

Now all this rookie needs is some patience and some luck! :D I must note the Joshua's are from two different sources and one pack appeared much larger, symmetrical, and generally "healthier". We'll see. The smaller more frail pack of Joshua seeds, I have tried before with no success (albei...

So I received an email from the www.chinlecactusclub.org member/club founder that planted the Brevifolia (Photo above) whose age we were discussing. Here is his answer quoted from the email. "They were seed grown by a friend in Utah. When he gave the three largest ones to us about 12 years ago ...

Thanks!

Love the site and how everyone shares their knowledge/experience. Definitely a fun new hobby for me. I used to have a reef aquarium which was fun but got too expensive and time-consuming.

Desert plants are a good compromise for me.

I have not covered it and don't plan to; I'm gonna roll the dice. Unless its 30 below and 1 foot of snow I doubt I will cover. Whenever it snows here it is usually only up to an inch or so. Anything more is fairly rare. Usually melts in a few days. We had a storm that left about 2-3 inches and stuck...

I am following this forums information and hints from the people at the local cacti club who have experience growing these. I 'sterilized' the soil last night in the oven, including the sand that will cover the seed when I plant them. Just waiting on my other pack of Joshua seeds then I will plant...

I was surprised by that figure too. I will try to confirm; once I join the local club I can ask the people who planted it. I got that 15 year figure from a member of the club.

http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah305/Bato367/121_zpsd83441a9.jpg Here is 1 of 3 or 4 Joshuas at the local gardens maintained by the Colorado State University Extension and the Chinle Cactus Club. Apparently these have been here for nearly 15 years and look great. We have had some cold inversio...

Sowing Seeds Round 2

So long story short, this is round 2 of trying to grow yuccas from seed. The first time I essentially had the soil too wet and cold to grow anything. Since then I have got better soil and a heated "germination station" that has a vented lid. i will keep updates in this thread in case anyon...

Seed Update

So my rostrata is doing great out front and we have had snow and cold as well. As for the seeds I planted, I was unsuccessful in getting any of them to germinate. Not sure if they were good/bad seeds or I did something wrong? I planted them in seedling trays, barely covered with soil, and covered wi...

Beautiful plants man!

I've got Brevifolia Var. Jager seeds coming but does anyone know where to buy a 1-3 ft. tall plant? I can't find them anywhere.

Why aren't they more readily available; there just isn't a demand for them or what?

My Yuccas in Zone 7a

Just seeing what your thoughts are on yuccas in zone 7a in Grand Junction, CO. It gets cold here, it gets hot here, and gets about 9" of precipitation per year. Those who aren't familiar with this place; it looks similar to Moab, UT and is only about an hour and a half east of there. I have see...
