Thanks for the pics Paul! Very interesting insights too. Found some y. glauca stricta pics after reading your post. Would love to get my hands on this species!
Thanks!

Yucca glauca RARE TREE FORM PLAINS YUCCA?
Hi Guys and Gals, What do you think about this? Seller on Ebay claims to have seeds for a trunking yucca glauca. Didn't think there was such a thing, although given their wide distribution-north to south over North America (Alberta-Texas)-I was thinking perhaps a southern variation of the species ma...

interesting zone evidence for Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg
I know it is a constant source of frustration for many here to have their respective USDA garden zones mis-categorized by their local nurseries. I know this is the case for me in Calgary, where we are largely regarded as 3a, even though our climate data clearly shows we're on the warm side of 4a for...

Scotty, This eBay seller will ship Carl Pool to Canada-I've bought it from them. The shipping is not cheap, but I personally think it's the best palm fertilizer out there. http://cgi.ebay.com/PALM-FOOD-Carl-Pool-12-4-12-Micronutrients-4lb-Can_W0QQitemZ270330374080QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFertilizer_Soil_A...

Super cool discussion folks! After reading this topic this morning, I though I remembered reading somewhere that brevifolia can not be crossed-in nature or by man. There's a guy in Denmark named Benny Moller Jensen who does extensive yucca crossing. I though I read on his website that brevifolia cro...

I think you have a pure j-tree in the pic. Leaves on young j-trees and seedlings are long and soft compared to older ones. It also takes about 3-5 years from seed for them to start a nice trunk. Becareful with the fertilizer, this can make a faster growing trunk but skinny and weak. Thanks Aaron! P...

Hi All, I purchased my brevifolia (what I hope are brevifolia, anyway) seeds through U.S. sellers on eBay. I'm starting to wonder if my seedlings are pure brevifolia, or brevifolia at all. They are definetly yuccas of some sort, but on some plants the leaves strike me as being too long and flaccid t...

Hi Barb, Looks great! How long did yours take to show some trunk? I've got some 7-8 month seedlings going now. Right now, they are very similar in appearance to yours, minus the trunk. I'm wondering how long it will take for these plants to take on a real JT appearance, i.e. where the plant essentia...

Hi All, Thanks for the responses to the post. There are certainly some cool examples out there already that defy these plant's very conservative USDA zone classifications. Yuccas are very intriguing for me in Calgary. It's super dry here and filimentosa and, especially, glauca are already proven her...

ranking of hardiest yuccas (assuming a dry winter)
Anyone want to make a semi-educated attempt at a top five (or ten if you can) hardiest yuccas list? I'm gearing this towards drier winter conditions, but feel free to chime in for more wet climes too! Here's my attempt: 1. glauca -no disputing this one-native to southeastern Alberta and hardy in Win...

Hi Barrie, I've got lots of buddies from the Pacific coast, here in Calgary-and they all want to go back someday! For me though (other than the year round palms), you guys can have it. I can't do 4-5 months of cold rain. Calgary gets cold, but it gets warm too-and it's always sunny, I love the sun. ...

Aaron, That's an absolutely beautiful pic, with your brevifolia in the snow. It's too bad, and crazy, that it's early October! You guys will have lots of warm weather left though. Our five-day forecast is crazy, even for Calgary! High tomorrow around 60f, and then lows by the end of the week in the ...

Well, despite our lovely late summer, our first freeze came this morning-and it was chilly: -4 Celsius (25f). Here's a picture of my Trachy, Needle and Med. Hi Bill, I've been wondering what will become of all these plants too. I know there are services in the U.S. that will plant palms for you and then dig 'em up for winter and store them inside. I'm wondering if someone is doing this in Calgary. By the way, your yard looks very cool! Keep it up! Duncan

Hi Ron, Funny you should ask! I think one of the most compelling cases for trunking yuccas in the Okanagan is zone 6 Salt Lake City, Utah (in addition to the evidence of those on this forum already doing it). See the following link to one of my previous posts on this very topic: http://palmsnorth.co...

Hi All, Just wanted to share some palm and yucca pics from my hometown: Calgary, Alberta, Canada (zone 3b). All photos (except my joshua tree seedlings were taken today-September 23, 2009). calgary palms
Hi Barb, Here's some quick shots of my palms. The last month has been great-unusually warm. Today's forecast is 33c (92f)-unheard of for this time of year! Slow consistent growth on all palms though. They had about 4 frosts in June and several brutal wind storms-my Washy lost a frond in this. The Tr...

brevifolia seedling update
Hi All, Just thought I'd share some pics of my brevifolia seedlings. The first batch, in April, didn't germinate at all. So I mail-ordered another batch-which germinated at a rate of 75-80% in about early June. I had them inside until about three weeks ago, when I tried them outside for around a wee...
