They grow outside in California. The ones that I have survived down to 23F and 25F but were damaged. High 20's does not seem to bother them if it is for a brief period. I would caution with planting them in normal soil as their roots are prone to rotting if kept too moist. They also will only bloom ...

Some Palms at UC Davis
Yesterday was a nice day here and I was able to take some pictures of some palms on the UC Davis Campus at ~38degrees Northern Latitude in the Central Valley of CA. I will post the name of the palm that I think it is but am probably a bit off on a couple of them. I'll Start of with one of my ...

Here are a few pictures of my largest one I have been growing from seed. Unfortuently I don't have a more recent picture of it as it now has 2-3 pinate leaves. All of my Jubaea seedlings took 25F, maybe lower fully exposed in full sun so I hope that they are ok. Dylan ~1.5 years old May 2010 <a href ...

I know that Arbutus unedo is a tough plant here in California. It needs little water and can tolerate abusive pruning. Here they are usually low branching forming a large bush to small tree. The way it is pruned is not the normal way that they grow. They produce ediable fruit that tastes terrible ...

Barb, I had trouble finding tall pots untill I bought a few palms that came in pots with Stuewe's name on them. I got some of the TP414 for my 100+ sago palms I grew from seed and some other seedlings and young palms. I also got some TP616 for some of the larger palms. I have tried germinating seeds ...

Nice garden pictures there. Your Plumeria looks much better than mine. Your Musa zebriana also looks very happy with the inflorescence. Bananieru, it is normal for Plumerias to drop their leaves during winter, however there may be some species or varieties that are evergreen in tropical climates ...

I would have never thought of growing Eucs that far north but here they are quite tough surviving drought, fire, and even mature trees being cut to the ground only to resprout. I don't think all species can be abused like this but maybe mulching them high or burrrying the lower part of the trunk ...

Now for a few plams. I did not take many up here as they would not do well except for the heat loving ones. Back to Front Left to Right. Butia, Dypsis decipiens, Bismarkia, and another D. decipiens. The D. decipens were soposed to be hardy but suffeded up to 50% foliage damage for a couple of nights ...

A few of my Plants
What a big differnce heat can make. Some of these plants have done what would normally be a years worth of growth in less than 3 months after moving them from a cool coastal climate to the central valley of California around 38.5 degrees North. I left some of the Sago palms Cycas revoluta here to ...

It's probabbly not a good idea to do much pruning now. I would only take off broken branchs if there are any. I think it would be best to let it establish its roots this year and start shaping it next year. It looks like it was pruned by a machine and cut at a certain level. I would try to keep it ...

Drainage Ditch Washy
This past winter was not too kind of the palms around here. My thermometer hit 24F and some more exposed areas diped into the upper teens. This is soposed to be a 9b hardiness zone. Here are some pictures of a Washy in a drainage ditch. It was completly browned in January as far as I could tell. I ...
