Re: Anyone growing cold hardy palms etc?

Sure am, just outside Yarmouth NS (USDA zone 7a/6b)
Over twenty species, all cold hardy, all currently young
A few large w.filifera in pots, 7 years old from seed.
Two species in ground...Sabal Louisiana and Rhapidophyllum hystrix...their first winter, wish me luck :)

Re: Fastest way to get a date palm to grow from a seed?

I soak mine in water for three days, fresh water daily
Then put them in a damp paper towel in a ziplock bag. Somewhere warm , with no light. Check every week for roots ...as you find some growing, transplant to a pot

Hello from Adam now in Hamilton Ontario

I haven't been on this board in a long while. I've been checking in though the last few weeks... how is everyone doing? I moved. Downsized. Have less plants of my own. I tend to more of my customers' gardens. I've been travelling. A lot. Shoot me a message and follow me on instagram (I'm adamseedsca...

Summit at 7400'. Beautiful. 30c and sunny in Kingston town at sea level, about 15c and cloudy at the summit. It came down in torrents on our hike back down through the rainforest. That rain ended once we came out of the clouds at about 4000 feet. About an hour drive from Kingston to Hagley Gap (elev...

Nope. Only a needle palm will survive in 7a with no protection... its the wind damage and moisture that kills all the others. I suggest south-facing wall with heavy mulch and shelter from ALL winter moisture and wind... then you may get in to some trachys, chamaerops, and maybe a pindo or a sabal. A...

I covered a large sabal minor two years ago for the first freeze event of the year, using a sonotube, rope and a vapor barrier tent. It was well secured, yet blew over. The sonotube got soft. I wouldn't use one again. The humidity causes them to fail.
