Warrior palms after the burian 2012...

During the extreme cold of January, the Siberian burian arrived to the North of Italy: I have registered an extreme minimum temperature of - 14,6 °C during one night and some other nights of -13°C. I have never seen such a bad weather here!!! Luckily among one hundred palms I have in the ground at m ...

Ancient Musa basjoo from 1895!!!

Here is a picture of an Italian plant catalogue from 1895. It is dedicated to Musa japonica (actually Musa basjoo). Is is named as "Banano rustico", that means "Rustic banana". Notice the winter ambientation of the drawing, suggesting the cold hardy quality of this species. Do you know further ...

A new good sized Brahea armata

Hi, here is the birtday present from my wife: a new good sized and silver Brahea armata! It's about 1,60 m from the ground: considering the hole 70 cm deep, it has been really a hard work for me to plant it after the job. I love it!!! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_IPDUeR1wwDc/TcgpH_7jLFI ...

A huge Jubaea from Italy

Here is me with my favourite species of palm: the Jubaea. I have several Chilean wine palms in my garden, but I will never see them growing to such size, as this specimen is about 100 years old. You can find it in the park of Nervi (Genoa, Italy). Best regards, Stefano Barone [/img]https://lh6 ...

Re: Report about young palms planted in my garden-North of I

Here are the dates about the temperatures in Cremona, my province. I live 52 Km far from Cremona and about 33 Km far from Milan, in a country town so in some cases the minimum temperatures were about 2 or 3 °C less at night. In any case my digital thermometers with outside probes (putted inside the ...

Re: photos sent

I just sent you two shark photos from snorkeling yesterday plus three of the cycad. One shows the entire plant, one shows the base with seedlings growing, some embedded in the trunk; the last shows the crown. Apparently the New York Botanical Garden could only ID it to "Cycas sp." and so that is ...

Stefano, it varies by length, and also among different manufacturers for the same length. All are quite low. My one trial with Christmas lights uses 125 watts for a single string, which I think is as much as all of my pipe heating cables combined. I'll record them when I get home if W has not ...

Stefano, thank you for sharing your protection methods here. Of the various palm forums, this one is the best for exchanging winter protection ideas. Seba, Nice cages. With fronds touching the plastic as it gets cold, do you make the cages larger? Barb It is better fronds never touch the garden tissue, so the cages should be of a good size. I prefer transpirant tissue rather than plastic as I know palms could suffer from fungi without a good ...

I don't use the heat cables so I don't know anything about them. I mainly use X-mas lights. I like them because I can screw in/unscrew a few bulbs for more/ less heat. I think in your climate you could just make a sleeve out of a couple old blankets and some plastic wrap and cover for the coldest ...

In general winters never go under - 6/7 °c here, but last winter I registered - 12 °C and one day - 15 °C. I use protections to all the younger palms planted in the ground during the last spring.

Waterproof heating cables

As I will be very busy for work in Dicember, I am starting to protect my younger palms from this week. I have bought several German 30 Watts heating cables with a built thermostat: in Germany they are generally used for external water pipes. They had a classic schuko plug. My electrician has cutted ...

HEATING CABLES

Dear Sirs, in the North of Italy - where I live - some people have lost some palms due to the actual very bad winter. I will plant 1 young Brahea armata, 2 six years old Jubeas, 1 young Butia capitata this spring, but I am thinking with much terror about the next winter... I've read that some people ...
