Re: My bamboo plants, zone 6

bend it to the ground, bury the crap out of it in leaves, then tarp it. We usually have reliable snow so that helps with insulation

Paul, Up here the temps have not gone below -27C! This winter is a strange one. Weeks of above normal temps then a week and a bit of cold then back to weeks at or above average. Night temps have not dipped to below average very much at all. The trees started to bud in november (Balsam poplar, maples...

Who is being affected by this awesome long fall?

We are still in mid september weather up here in NW ontario. Our red maples are budding here. Lilacs still have green leaves. No snow yet. This is going to be a whopper of an El Nino this year

FOund full sized Musa Basjoo

Home depot for some reason has 5 foot tall basjoo for 30 bucks. Is it true that the bigger the plant the better chance of it surviving well mulched? If so i may have to splurge and grab one

Glad to hear some of the bamboo survived. IF i protected my alata i bet I would have 8 foot proper looking culms. Im tempted to dig it out, but really wanna see if it still will put up some decent sized culms. My grandma has a PJM thats about 4.5 feet tall and it has been there for a while (10-15 ye...

Really nice paul..... Up here the winter was more "average", but still a bit harsh. My hellikki rhodi had a bit of damage but thats normal. What really surprised me was that every single PJM got hit. Last winter was way colder and way longer and it did ok. Other parts exposed did fine. Thi...

Somehow managed to get a needle palm to survive

I forgot I planted this last year. I found it today and it looks like it survived. I think the damage on the ends of the leaves are the extent of the damage.

We had a rather "normal" winter, which is long cold and snowy. Five feet+ of snow, long time between freezing and above freezing temps. Minor tip dieback on the apple and plum. More survived then I thought. Some I thought would make it seem to have not. Cant imbed from flickr for some reas...

Cant wait to get it all planted.
