For sure, they were a lot bigger last year with the same treatment so definitely in decline if the leaves are not saved this year. I have 2 sabal minors. I was just planning on covering them with trash cans. Do you know if that's generally all thats necessary to keep the previous years fronds from d...

Jim, do you think it is detrimental to the Sabal Minor Louisiana to have its fronds die back each year?

I was thinking about leaving it but I noticed that the yucca in the second picture has scale. I wasnt about to try to get the scale off a yucca. I was wondering how my sabal got scale. Now I know.

I know this reputation, but in my experience they are not any more difficult than other palms. KrisK here has one of mine. It is doing way better for him than it did for me. I have moved others, out to Oregon. That's good to know. So I don't have to act like I'm performing surgery when removing it?

Snow can act as an insulation. The main reasons plants are less hardy in the east is because of the amount of precip. If the plants are not hardened off they are not as hardy as possible. Also we tend to have warm spells were the plants are semi dormant and then the temps drop drastically. If freez...

If you have to dig the palm the roots are gonna die back. The palm will have to regrow new ones. Just keep it watered and it should be fine. I have changed my mind on placement and been able to yank sabals out of the ground without breaking roots. But after a full growing season that maybe too hard...

I have transplanted a couple that were only in the ground for 2 years at most. And never any over a 5 gallon size. Good luck Did you break any of the roots? I assume preserving as many roots as possible is important, but I wonder if it can handle having any roots cut. Mine's only been in the ground...

Transplanting a Sabal Minor McCurtain

We're thinking about moving in about a year and a half and so I am considering uprooting my Sabal Minor McCurtain come spring time. I have heard that in general it is impossible to transplant a sabal minor. Mine isn't very big so I was thinking maybe I'd have a chance. Has anyone here been successfu...

Everything looks good. Agaves tend to be extremely xeric, and their hardiness depends on them being hardened off ( dry ). So once winter sets in my xeric agaves like havardiana and parryi will get covered a day or two before cold weather. The clear plastic actually helps dry the ground around them....

Had to have been the earlier conditions I would think.... That small amount of snow and cold should not have done that-weird. I could see the spear rotting being due to the cold but it seemed like the leaves rotting was caused directly by the snow. One proof of this was that my harvardianas leaves ...

Nice....any holes in the plastic covers on the Agave to let moisture out/keep from overheat? Yep, I drilled maybe 15 holes on each side.
