Beny, great results. The problem I have with heat cable is that I can not see if they are working or not during the winter. Something like schrodinger's cat, it can be both dead or alive till you open it in the spring. Do you still leave an opening at the top and one at the bottom?

https://goo.gl/photos/2yj4UJompvpQqnqm6 2016 edition; I used only heat cables and I forgot to put inside the wireless thermometer, so I was not sure if it was working or not. I would say It came out OK. Just a few burnt leaves that were touching the box. I may have to move to the mummy method next y...

first cold days of this winter for Toronto area

Image

So far we had a very mild winter and practically no snow. For a few days only, a taste of winter, just in time for NBA all star game :-)

I still have that little fan, I'm just not sure if it ever kicks in as it's on a tc2, on at 20F (-7C). I don't have a thermometer this year, but last year I never seen the temperature going under 0C. And this year was not that cold anyway.

It's more of an insurance.

I went with the cables, but I added one regular bulb on the ground. It's hard to find those old Christmas lights.

The wrapping used is called arbotex. It's more expensive than burlap but it's reusable.

I have one, and it's not growing. It's not dying but it's a very, very slow grower. I read that they are very sensitive to any move.

you can see here how I protect my trachy. I started with Christmas lights, but by spring more than half of them were burned. So I started to use heat cables. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/bananieru/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140406_102839_zpsqc0pmnhy.jpg The disadvantage of using heat cables i...

No more washys in the ground for me. I had one that suffered after a bad spring and it did not move for the last two summers. I'll stick with trachys in the ground for now. This is how mine looked 2 years ago when I opened it up (to early): http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/bananieru/Mobile%20...

Your washy is doing fine :-). In your area is a little warmer than in Markham, but I'll gladly share my experience with you.

I used this heater on a tc2:
www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-MyHeat-200-Wa ... /202363459

The advantage is that it has a little fan to move the air around. I used them for the last 2-3 winters, and they are still working fine.

My advise is not to over water them for a while. There is enough humidity in the ground and we may still have cold days ahead.

this winter I had three different systems in the box: 1. Christmas lights on a TC3 (35F/45F -2c/7c). They were mostly on the ground. Very unreliable, I think there were only 2-3 bulbs working when I opened the box. I will use roof deicing cables next year. 2. A pipe cable with it's own thermostat. T...

Beny, I'm counting on you. The old method with a hut is getting out of control once they grow over 8'. Please document somewhere the method you're using. You're doing a great job.

Thank you for posting,

Next year it's going to be Benny's mummy method or nothing. The structure to protect the palm is getting out of control. It looks now like a monument. Harder and harder to build and to store. And the fact that I have to erect it sooner and take it off later doesn't help either.
