Random thought...
I've had a random thought for a long long time, and perhaps it has been discussed here before...but theoretically, if you could wrap heat cable around palm roots and protect with a large enough temporary greenhouse in winter, could you grow more tender palms in cooler climates?? (coconuts, adonidia,...

Best winter protection for SE Kansas (zone 7a)
About time to start thinking about protection methods here in southeast Kansas...our first freeze falls around the first week of November. Here's what I have in the ground: Trachycarpus, Sabal mexicana, three Washingtonia "filibusta", and a Chamaerops humilis. I plan to build boxes from t...

My highly experimental collection has grown! ;)
First post on here in a while...this has definitely been a productive summer here in southeast Kansas...As of right now, I have in the ground: a Trachy, a Butia, three Washy "filibusta", a Chamaerops, and a Sabal mexicana...all growing very well, with the exception of the Trachy, which was...

Looks like our lowest this year was 5 degrees F...only one night...However, we had many days where the highs were only in the upper 20s, and about a week where there was 3 inches of snow on the ground. When the polar vortex came through, it dropped into the teens and stayed there for 3 days...fun! H...

Here's some pictures of some Sabal (and a needle) specimens in Wichita, they all look great! Unfortunately, losses like this are part of the hobby:/ Don't give up, bro! My butia's spear pulled after a very unseasonable and extremely rare hard freeze in early April, my Sabal palmetto is drying up from the drought, despite frequent irrigation, and the wind has literally shredded one of my Tra...

Wow, to have it make it through a winter...and to loose it when its nice outside. Tough loss. Yeah, I was pretty devastated:/ I overwintered it by throwing a tomato cage around it and stuffing that with leaves...that spring, it was pretty bad looking, but about 3 weeks later, a new little spear sho...

Livistona was my very first palm, I bought it when I was probably 10 years old. I managed to overwinter it in the ground, only to have it die the following summer while we were out of town (we were on a 10 day cruise in the West Indies, and my dad's friend watching the house forgot to water it) duri...

Does Texana means Brazoriensis? . Sabal texana usually means Sabal mexicana but purchased in the Republic of Texas. They're touchy down there. Haha it's funny that you bring that up because when I bought it, after learning they didn't sell Washingtonias at this particular nursery, I asked if ...

Mate all the Sabals will find their own way to the water (whatever the soil) even through clay, its not their favorite soil but dont worry much. Does Texana means Brazoriensis? Make a few photos of it, especially if its a bigger one, please.. Put some small stones on the bottom of that hole and mix...

Sabal minor will be fine. Would be happier with afternoon shade, so maybe shade it some if leaves seem to burn in June. Can the palmetto be up close to the house? Easier to protect, like Lucky1's Trachy. Perhaps, however, the builder who built our house backfilled everything with clay, instead of g...

My advice is to put a Sabal minor there. Good idea, I'll do just that...now to fill in the massive hole I made:P My palmetto would probably look and do better as a specimen palm in the yard anyway, instead of close to the house. Edit: Whoops, in the original post, I meant to put NW side of the hous...

Soil too slowly draining for Sabal texana?
I have a 15 gallon Sabal texana that I am wanting to plant on the NE corner of my house. I dug a large hole (2 feet wide by 2 feet deep) and filled it with water where I intend to plant. The water took well over 4 hours to completely drain from the hole (lots of clay). Will this drown my Sabal if I ...

I bought a beautiful Texas sabal in Dallas yesterday. The palm is about 5 feet tall with an inch or so of "trunk"...Anyway, last night, I decided to leave all my palms out in their "acclimation area" before I plant. Low was anticipated to be 32F. Long story short, that was wrong,...

Anyone know where to buy a Sabal palmetto?
I'm looking for nurseries or other sources that sell Sabal palmettos, particularly in Texas. I've searched several places, but have no idea where to find one...any sources would be appreciated! Thanks!
