It's true very few sabal seedlings survive potting, it's hard to keep them alive when they are small (even harder when you get them bare root without soil like i did..) I don't think seedlings in the ground will be goners, survivors should be cherished, and yes the leaves on your 4-5 year old sabal ...

dead at the first sign of frost Well, apart from the age of the palm that you plant, I think the trick is to always protect palms well ahead of any sign of frost. Perhaps even a type of cover that can be opened on mild days if you get a warm spell before the depth of winter cold arrives. And perhap...

Beautiful needle, nice size.. i protect mine covering it only mine is three times smaller, no heat but winters here are milder and little shorter than Can. northern Am. etc. this is zone 6-7. Yes it likes water and semi shaded position, in winter soil has to be dry.

Dont give up :) If those trachies by the pool are in ground ok.. if there is concrete below the soil thats no place for them, its like you planted them in a concrete pot.
Good protection, mild winter and you're ok.

Mate all the Sabals will find their own way to the water (whatever the soil) even through clay, its not their favorite soil but dont worry much. Does Texana means Brazoriensis? Make a few photos of it, especially if its a bigger one, please.. Put some small stones on the bottom of that hole and mix ...
