Who wants to see my windmill palm?? It's growing faster than the dandelions and crab grass :) Flowering a ton this year. I'm scratching my head on how I'm going to protect this thing in the next year. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_5516_zpsvbfkqhm7.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Canary Island Date Palm in zones 5-7?
Anyone have any luck....and their success story in getting these to survive winters in those zones? Picked up 3 (two smaller ones) on a road trip to California this spring. Going to just keep them in pots in garage this winter, but would sure like to plant one of the smaller ones in the spring if t...

The tale of unprotected young trachys
I scattered these trachy seeds in the far reaches of my backyard in late fall 2012. Last summer they germinated and grew one strap leaf each before winter set it. I did nothing to protect them going into winter. No extra mulch, no leaves, definitely no heat. I only let them have what mother nature d...

Finished the pond and other pics
Well, whoever has been following me these past few months know that I was put in charge of landscaping for the new building we are moving into at work. I've been working out there about 8 hours a week since March... first it was clear cutting a bunch of trees, shrubs, etc. Then I had to move a bunch...

No Phoenix, lol. I like cold hardy ones that only have to be covered 3 months a year. I got them from Palms Unlimited out of Mobile, AL. Great company to work with and the palms look great. The pallet was 1,100 lbs and cost approx $1,200 shipped to my loading dock. The needles ARE huge. I didn't mea...

1,100 lbs of palms here. (3) needle palms and (1) windmill palm.
Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me later this afternoon to get them in the ground.

If only nurseries up here were brave enough to get a few of these..... Slightly unrelated question.... do you remember when you started your papaya seeds last year? Yeah, the nurseries down here won't even carry those northern belles even though the tag says zone 4. The guy says they aren't hardy h...

Sorry man. Sucks that it fried up. Living across the pond from you, I really think you should get styrofoam in there somehow. It will help lower your electric bill and also insulate the palm better. I can even see a big hole where the cord comes in. I bet your palm saw extended periods of temps bel...

Uncovered my windmill palm last weekend
Finally getting around to posting pics, but I uncovered my windmill palm last weekend. Here's how it looks after the 3rd coldest winter ever. Its pushing 10' tall and looks better than some windmill palms in Atlanta :) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_04011_zps8667a308.jpg Pic from ...

Some new plantings today to kick off spring!
I picked up my 5 Magnolia virginiana 'Northern Belles' yesterday and planted them today. I planted 3 at work where I am doing a complete landscape overall to the new building we are moving in. I planted 2 in my front yard which will hopefully help compliment my 'Edith Bogue' and '24 Below' -- I hope...

Thanks guys. The EE bulbs were the size of golf balls when I planted them this spring. Yes the papaya are pushing 3 feet. I went to the local grocery store in spring, picked up a papaya, and harvested the seeds. Started them in my greenhouse in March/April and into the ground the end of May. Seem to...

Thanks everyone! I hopefully will be able to eat the citrus before fall. Man that stuff ripens slowly! LOL. So far I've gotten about 10 inches of rain in the last 2 months. An inch fell today so far. Reminiscing the past and enjoying the present!
Hit 90 degrees officially in my yard today and with dewpoints in the low 70s it was definitely a nice, hot, muggy day. Love days like this. Just over a month ago I had the worst devastating May freeze I can ever remember ... and it came in an already cold spring. This past week has been very nice an...

Some pics around the yard tonight
Finally starting to warm up. What a slow, delayed spring this year. But it's time to look forward to the summer and not get upset about a spring that you can't control. Here are some pictures. My windmill palms are starting to really push the fronds out again. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/w...

It is now confirmed. My magnolia grandiflora '24 below' made it through winter with ZERO dieback. All the buds are now swelling and it's beginning to leaf out. It was wrapped with plastic its first winter. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_5037_zpsf979505b.jpg http://i7.photobucket.c...
