I planted P. nuda last summer. Gave it no mulch this winter or any other protection. It came back just fine here in zone 5b :). Winter low was -16F.

Who wants to see my windmill palm?? It's growing faster than the dandelions and crab grass :) Flowering a ton this year. I'm scratching my head on how I'm going to protect this thing in the next year. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_5516_zpsvbfkqhm7.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Canary Island Date Palm in zones 5-7?

Anyone have any luck....and their success story in getting these to survive winters in those zones? Picked up 3 (two smaller ones) on a road trip to California this spring. Going to just keep them in pots in garage this winter, but would sure like to plant one of the smaller ones in the spring if t...

I spread the seeds in late November.

And what does it matter if the meristem is above or below ground? The ground was frozen SOLID down 3 feet last winter. I don't think location would change the fate of the trees in that condition.

The tale of unprotected young trachys

I scattered these trachy seeds in the far reaches of my backyard in late fall 2012. Last summer they germinated and grew one strap leaf each before winter set it. I did nothing to protect them going into winter. No extra mulch, no leaves, definitely no heat. I only let them have what mother nature d...

Finished the pond and other pics

Well, whoever has been following me these past few months know that I was put in charge of landscaping for the new building we are moving into at work. I've been working out there about 8 hours a week since March... first it was clear cutting a bunch of trees, shrubs, etc. Then I had to move a bunch...

No Phoenix, lol. I like cold hardy ones that only have to be covered 3 months a year. I got them from Palms Unlimited out of Mobile, AL. Great company to work with and the palms look great. The pallet was 1,100 lbs and cost approx $1,200 shipped to my loading dock. The needles ARE huge. I didn't mea...

Finally getting around to posting pics, but I uncovered my windmill palm last weekend. Here's how it looks after the 3rd coldest winter ever. Some new plantings today to kick off spring!

I picked up my 5 Magnolia virginiana 'Northern Belles' yesterday and planted them today. I planted 3 at work where I am doing a complete landscape overall to the new building we are moving in. I planted 2 in my front yard which will hopefully help compliment my 'Edith Bogue' and '24 Below' -- I hope...

Scott,

I apply Carl Pool in mid May and early July. I Miracle-Gro every other week all summer and water every other day. It seems to have worked. From 3 gallon to flowering in 5 years (in Wisconsin).

Barb,

Yes I need to get some updated shots. The jungle is going nuts out there!
