We're going down here in Poland in a few past days. New minimal temperatures arrived: -24 C / -11.2 F Wow! Here in Western Ukraine we didn't see lower than -19C so far. Generally Poland is somewhat warmer than Western Ukraine. ------added: Ooops... sorry! Seems like I have not noticed date of that ...

It is a variety, not subspecies. In fact, var.borealis is just plain Magnolia kobus. You will not see the difference.
It needs light acid soil, semi-shade and moisture.

Most northern palms in that area (Black Sea) grow in South Crimea, Ukraine. It's zone 7b. However, 99% of Crimean palms are usual trachies, Trachycarpus fortunei.
