Very nice agave, I have one that I ordered from a member at Agaveville. After seeing these in bloom here in N.C. I thought I my give it a chance. Macroculmis is no longer a proper name since they were originally misidentified by Gentry. I believe what was sold as Macroculmis is now gentryi. But who ...

Nice pics, love those stressed out cacti. The colors are awesome, reminds me of aloes in spring. That agave v-r is huge, the one in bloom at PDN is only about 18" wide. But with the lack of precip and nutrients will allow them to grow forever there.

Loving that princep! I bet your palms are loving this spring weather right now. I just hope it holds out, and we only have light frost from here on out. I cant wait to start planting.

Is that an agave salimiana pupping out in front of your parryi?

We had a very mild winter also, only dropping to 15° F ( -9.44 C). We had 1 stretch were we stayed under freezing for 48 hrs. The most damaging was all winter storms here were solid ice.

Burnt windmills

Going into winter all of my windmills and two needles found theirselves in a new location. So for extra precaution I used Christmas lights this yr. Plus, during our ice storms I wrapped the fronds with a blanket then frost cloth. Results were about 80/20. I have 1 palm with spear pull, 1 palm that I...

Once they develop an underground trunk they are almost impossible to transplant unless you know what you are doing. I know Tony move some at PDN but I believe he was using front loaders to help gather the root ball.

Snow can act as an insulation. The main reasons plants are less hardy in the east is because of the amount of precip. If the plants are not hardened off they are not as hardy as possible. Also we tend to have warm spells were the plants are semi dormant and then the temps drop drastically. If freezi...

If you have to dig the palm the roots are gonna die back. The palm will have to regrow new ones. Just keep it watered and it should be fine. I have changed my mind on placement and been able to yank sabals out of the ground without breaking roots. But after a full growing season that maybe too hard.

Everything looks good. Agaves tend to be extremely xeric, and their hardiness depends on them being hardened off ( dry ). So once winter sets in my xeric agaves like havardiana and parryi will get covered a day or two before cold weather. The clear plastic actually helps dry the ground around them.

Im glad someone is having luck with agave utahnesis. I planted my last one this year in 75% granite on a slope and it rotted before the end of September. I do still have a hybrid utahnesis var colorata that might fair better.
