Curious how much snow you had this winter; we had very little so my y.filamentosas look worse than they ever have. I should rip 'em out and replace with glauca. Great carpentry job. How difficult is it for a non-electrical person to figure out solar components/wiring? Hi Barb! When I say 'solar', I...

That is one good looking garden! I see you went by Vegas. :D Love the agave shots. 8) Keep us posted on your yuccas! Thanks Aaron! Yeah those agave nevadaenis/utahenis grow high up and they're so beautiful! Glad to see you've had a far more normal winter. Soon the blaze will be on-with your plants ...

my Calgary, Alberta, Canada desert-winter 2011/12
Hi All, Haven't been posting much the last little while. I still check in on the site to see everyone's cool plants though. Just wanted to give you guys a quick look at what I've been up to and how my plants are faring this winter. Firstly, we've had a tropical winter by our standards, failing to re...

Thanks Jay! Have you checked out Red Rock Canyon just west of the city. Very cool rock formations, not to mention J-Tree, bacatta and mojave yucca forests! For everyone who called me crazy for saying that Trachies aren't pretty, check out the little guys in the picture 3rd from the bottom! They're n...

Wow :D -man your yard is too cool, Tim! Thanks for the update pics. I didn't know there would be a yucca moth in your neck of the woods Tim, as I didn't think you had an endemic yucca species....very cool. I really love those filimentosa-elata hybrids. Can't wait till mine get bigger-although they p...

Hi Tim! Very cool. I bet they'd be super hardy too. You don't have any trunking glauca seeds kicking around, by chance, do you? I've got some very nice little yucca seedlings coming along from the seeds you gave me. I'll get some pics up soon. Hope the plants are wintering well Tim! Take Care, Duncan

Hey Guys, Aaron, thanks for the I.D.! Hope the plants are wintering well since the early blast. Tim, I've got some nice little yuccas germinating from the seeds you sent me (various hybrids of, I believe, elata, filimentosa, pallida, thompsoniana and flaccida) . I've had great success so far. I'll p...

Joshua Tree National Park January 2011
Hi Guys, Been too busy lately and missing the forum! Just wanted to share some photos from Joshua Tree National Park, from a recent trip to the Coachella Valley in Southern California last month. I'm sure many of you will recognize the plants, which include: a Washy Filifera oasis, Nolina parryi, Mo...

The Phoenix Open Golf tourney, in Scottsdale, had to cancel their practice round on Wednesday, not just for frost (which does happen occasionally at this time of year) but because the greens were frozen solid :verycold: :? ! What the heck? The tourney's director said he's never seen it in 30 years. ...

Hi Barb :D ! Second Chinook, but I was in Southern California when the first one came. So sad to have missed it  ! I've got some nice palm/yucca pictures from down there. Also, I uncovered my y.rostrata today. I'm very pleased with how it looks. I'll have to get some pictures up when I get a ch...

Absolutely wicked, brutal cold. There will, indeed, be some real damage in many zone-pushing type places where elaborate protection schemes, seen on PN, are less prevalent. Good example, Albuquerque, NM-next two nights will be -22c...-8f!!! :lickice: Many marginal plants will be toast in this once i...

Barb, These tend to be, what I cynically call, suicide prevention forecasts  . I think they're more of a public mental health service than science. I figure the only scientific part is the 50/50 probability that a chinook will occur after an arctic blast. The only thing the forecasters get ri...

Thanks Jim!
Unlike many places in Canada, we do thankfully get breaks in the form of the warm westerly chinook winds.
Looks like we could be cooking by next weekend !

Canadian, what's your real name? For many of the reasons you just mentioned-as counter-intuitive as it might seem to some-I think palms and yucca make a great deal of sense here-mainly as annuals that can be brought in during winter...and for some yuccas as perennials. What other kinds of plants can...

Hey- I'm not convinced that Yucca truly have a dormancy period. I've been meaning to bring this question of winter yucca dormancy up on the forum. It's a great point you make. The plan is to keep them cool all winter, so as to not induce growth, hence not a great need for light. I worry about the i...

Canadian, you're right...that's hilarious  . I was trying to think of that city too. It's Ulaanbaatar. Neat looking place, maybe I'll go someday. For sure too on those other desolate places listed. I think Helsinki, Finland is up there too-probably more moderate though ie. colder summers, sligh...

Sure, rub it in Paul :x , 8) .! It's amazing the moderating influence of large bodies of water isn't it? I always figure those Trachys on English Bay, in Vancouver, for example are way better off than plants further inland...in the winter, that is. They likely miss out on inland heat, in the summer....

That looks professional Jim :D . I love Washys, but I find them by far the most fragile between Trachy, Med. Fan and Needle. I fried my Robusta in a pot at about -6c (say 21f) this fall. The others, no problem. Mind you, the others were in pots, in the ground :? . BTW, are those beauties Robusta, Fi...

Jim, I tell ya, I'm in the wrong part of the world for this hobby! I would like variation in seasons for my plant hobby-say like Denver, SLC, Reno, that kind of thing but Calgary's just all around ridiculous :? ! Or, I'd take San Diego and just grow everything and never worry-just enjoy the most liv...
