The moved Trachy

Hello John The moved Trachy on a windy day. You can see that it is establishing roots since the crown is compact. It can take a year to find out the result of a move. Larry's rescued palm put out fewer leaves but the root ball was much smaller. I took so much root on mine that I would not have been ...

Brazilian Needle Palm on Vancouver Island

Another request image for John It has slightly greyish leaves that are rigid (compared to fortunei) and pointy. But not as rigid as T. campestris. Some people have touched the leaf tips. Something they wouldn't want to repeat. The trunk has long needles. It is very deer proof. http://www.postimage.o...

Green princeps on Vancouver Island

I'm not the only one growing the glossy "green princeps". I call it the false princeps. It's like having a fortunei with martianus features. I consider it care free hardy after last winter. It's stuffed between a Jub and a wag with bowl-shaped leaves. http://www.postimage.org/Ts1NC9MA.jpg

Hello

Here are some of the images you requested.

On this image is the row of wagnerianus palms planted this past Sept. This will turn into a linear mass of wagnerianus fronds.

What is the BC coast without wagnerianus?

I remember when the Vancouver wags were a rare 5 gal purchase from the mainland. They are now mature specimens gracing gardens on Salt Spring & Vancouver Island. They are now an easy, local find from seed to palm. 8)

Enjoy

Butia with Jub

Another image of a Butia (actually the smallest in that garden) with another nice coastal Jubaea palm. Another previously tiny Jub speeding up in growth. Locals can at least start at 15 gal these days.

Hello John

This is the big Jub that was planted as a small specimen by Jeff. Notice the small-leaf wagnerianus to the right.

Note that 20 gal T. wagnerianus palms are in the works with larger (crated) Jubs. But Jubs are better for your summers. 15 gal Butia eriospatha & Jubs are here on the island with a selection of 5 gal wags. A wag would be great for Barb. I noticed that the nicest wags up-island were in shade. The...

Bill no heat index

Our temps are usually absolute because warm high pressure systems coming up from the US SW are very dry. Bad for small Trachys on years that have heat spells. Great for Jubs of course. I live out here because I like this cool zone 8 climate. Not many heatwaves or summer humidex but palms. Okanagan D...

Okanagan desert-palms: Bigger Jubs next spring

Hello John I read news that Port Alberni hit temps above 40C so I wonder if you got 45 or 47C as max highs in July. My place hit 36C again (away from water) after a few years which did surprise me. I expect 32 or 33C max in summer. How are your palms & yuccas doing? A variety of yuccas (large on...

The two-storey palm has smashed itself into an overhang that it cannot clear. It must be dug out by hand only and removed sideways. Up is no option. I must remove it spring or else a chainsaw will be used to destroy this Vancouver Island grown palm. Go figure that it had been growing in open air bef...

Wow, talk about a classic cold spell! I've heard of the worst "winter outbreaks" but this past one was indeed a classic. Of course T. fortunei palms escape with bent leaf tips due to snow but are amazingly cold hardy. T. wagnerianus palms are dark green against the snow. It's now time to f...

Larry's big Trachy move on Vancouver Island.

Corbin & I helped Larry for a day move as this mature Trachy was in need of a rescue. The tree was given to Larry so he handed the owner an olive tree. The owner has another palm but is not a palmnut. These are images of the fall move of a mature Trachy estimated at 15 ft by Larry. He called me ...

This is an update image of the tall wagnerianus in Greater Victoria. The palm has done well since I first noticed it. It looks like it gets summer watering. It grows in a tight area but nothing that a Trachy can't handle. I wonder how hot your temps got in your respective locations. I noticed Litton...

Brahea edulis & armata on Vancouver Island

These palms have seen two winters near Victoria, BC. After talking to different Brahea owners, they told me that Brahea edulis is a tougher palm than Washingtonia. The Brahea armata is hardier than B. edulis but grows slower. This is an image of two specimens on Vancouver Island. http://www.postimag...

Insane palm move did work! (images)

John, we snapped our tow line that was rated at two tons. We rocked the palm back and forth with a truck. It took all day as we were required to dig more and break rocks to free the root ball. The Trachy had a big root system for that type of palm. The tree fell hard and was dragged out of the prope...

Okanagan desert-palms: Saving a big palm from the chainsaw

This palm is threatened by the chainsaw and I will attempt to move it into my garden. I'd pay more than 2K for a Trachy of that size in Victoria or the best cheapest place in Vancouver. Buddy wants it gone ASAP. It's too big and into wires. It's a shame when people in Victoria cut down mature Cordyl...

Trachycarpus roots

I plant my Trachys with the top roots 1 or 2 inches below ground. Roots don't like to dry out. And in my case I plant them out and that protects against cold. (A Trachy is more hardy in the ground than in a pot.) Soil more than a few inches above the roots is not good. You've done a great job with y...
