Still green in zone 5b... crazy! What was the lowest temperature you can remember from this year? We saw -25C a couple of evenings. The palm has seen up to -9 in the past with no protection at all. I leaned my rigid foam covers up against it to form a little bit of a windbreak. I'm pretty happy it ...

Rough Winter
So winter was actually quite mild this year but my busy fall meant I didn't get a chance to cover the palm properly. I wrapped it in moving blankets and a tarp which resulted in too much moister and mold. That being said she's alive and growing with 8 Flower Pods coming off it. Should I cut the ...

Wheelman, The greenhouse is attached to the garage and the garage door is not there. The garage itself is heated with a gas ceiling mount furnace. The garage has always been heated but this year I had to install a new one. We angled out towards the front of the garage more so the heat makes it into ...

Barb, It's a 10x8 with 10' walls plus the extra height for the roof which I needed to clear the Banana's I decided not to cut back. I'll enjoy it a little more when I don't have to fight my way through all the palms lol. Also just about taken care of my insect issue as well. It stays pretty warm ...

I'll be opening up my big guy early next week to look inside, check moisture and also put a remote sensor for a thermometer. It rarely turns off so I'm not sure if its holding just below the threshold for it to shut off or really dropping down in temp. My two small boxes are on 3 - 4 times a day max ...

Thanks Barb. One was looking a lil worse for wear but they all seem to be doing ok in the Greenhouse. We are supposed to get up to 3c on Monday or Tuesday, I may use the opportunity to build the small extension on my greenhouse and move these 4 guys plus 2 Canary Island Date Palms I have into it ...

Rescued Palms
I was walking out of my GF's condo building one day when the grounds crew there was pulling these out of the planters. I asked if they kept them or threw them away and the guy told me they just toss them. It was Nov 16th when I rescued them lol. I threw them in the back of my van I had with me that ...

So, what temperatures are you experiencing? What are your lows, what are the durations of below freezing temperatures? If I know what you are dealing with, I could give you a fairly accurate answer on what you would have to do to keep them alive. Our average temperature this past winter was 2.4 C ...

All the palms were in very good shape. I moved the Needle to the backyard from where it was sitting in the pot. I have my Dwarf Palmetto planted off to the left of the big guy. I also moved one of my grasses and put a hardy hibiscus there. I should be finished my backyard by tomorrow and will take ...

Barb, My palms arrived today and I'll be planting the big one later today. I'm going to be using a quality triple mix and use your idea of adding the kitty litter vs the perlite. How much should be mixed in the soil, one 20kg bag per 1/4 yard or? Also, Paul, when you say mulch at the bottom of your ...
