Wow! Those bananas look like they've been growing for years straight. I can almost feel the humidity in those photos! ;)

Speaking of which, do the Basjoo's have any purpose? I know they're mostly fiber and big seeds, but is there any other use other than decoration?

Cocoon/white worm on fronds of Trachycarpus?

So I think I got the deal of the century to replace my 2 Trachys that didn't fare too well this past winter (tho I believe both are still "alive"). I got a 7 gallon Trachy (I think it's a Nainital, as the trunk is slanted and the fronds are thinner) for $30. The thing is about 5 ft. tall a...

I wouldn't say it's fine by any means. I guess instead of white, I should've said it just seemed like live tissue growth. Who knows. But with every passing day I'm losing hope for them... Not to mention because of the extremely harsh winter we just had, most of the nurseries around here that carried...

I meant white as in new tissue... I assume that means alive and not dead as a doornail since it's brand new growth..

When to know if it's fully dead?

So I had posted in another topic that both my trachy's spear pulled after the horrendous winter here in NJ. I cut off all the dead fronds, pulled the spears and sprayed copper fungicide in the middle. Also cut the trunk to get most of the black rot gone as best I could, but that meant cut to the gro...

Unbelievable

So here I am in Central New Jersey... 1 fig tree planted in June outside (uncovered), thriving now in spring, 1 Chamaerops Humilis, completely left alone, only snow covering it. Main center growth is dead, but all the babies around the lower trunk are green, alive, and growing. 2 Trachycarpus covere...

Winterizing *gasp*

I know it's still midsummer, but as my palms are enjoying their first year of rooting in ground, I thought I'd ask what folks would recommend as the best winterizing method. Is it worth building a frame? And what's the best material to use to wrap? Xmas lights on the inside or outside of wrap? Sorry...

Home Depot in West Windsor has 50% off all trees, including cold hardy palms. They have some really nice looking ones. For $12.50, you really can't go wrong.

I got a thai giant that wasn't even a bulb. (guessing it was a pup), but it took and is about your size now. Honestly, it feels like Thailand in NJ this year so maybe it will really take off. Great pics. Those trachy's should give anyone living just about anywhere that with a little bit of effort, l...

That is amazing! I saw the photos from when the trachys were planted to where they are now. You should do a time lapse slideshow. Great example of how hard work pays off!

All I know is the figs look amazing too! I can't believe how many people still think figs can't grow in this area. Drive around Jersey City/Hoboken and they literally grow like weeds. Congrats on the amazing garden!

Trachycarpus species question...

Forgive me if I should know the answer to my own question, but I've recently purchased and planted 2 Trachycarpus "Fortunei's" and they must be very different species. One has very thin blades on the fan/frond that seem to "split" where they should, the other has the same fronds,...

At least here in western central NJ, I can tell you first hand, if you had a potters wheel, you could make a lot of pottery here. And after digging about a foot or so deep, the layers of shale are like an archeological dig.

I'll take some pics soon. The soil here has a lot of clay and shale. So far they seems to have done ok with transplanting shock. I'll probably protect them somewhat this winter to give them a fighting chance. They also had a few Musa Basjoo's that were being sold as a bundle with other "tropica...

Cold Hardy Palms in NJ

If anyone is around the Northern NJ area, just thought I'd let them know that Corrado's in Clifton, NJ has 3.5 gallon Trachy's and chamaerops humilis (Mediterranean dwarf palms) on sale. Normally $34.99, 25% off, so they're about $26. All seem healthy. I bought a few Trachy's and 1 Humilis. Fingers ...

Hello from Jersey City, NJ (NYC basically)

Really am glad I found this place. Hopefully, it keeps growing. I didn't see anything on the forums so I thought I might suggest a forum for "stores selling palms" or something like that. It'd be nice to know if someone with a keen eye happened to be at a Home Depot or Lowes, or any other ...

NYC/NJ Palms?

I live in Jersey City, NJ right across the river from NYC, and I must say that this was the winter that never was (so far... fingers crossed). Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and only have a few palms indoors, but was wondering if anyone had any growing outdoors this winter? I'm imagining any ...
