"the mold/fungus eats
through the spear and severs it-usually the spear will grow out of it-"
Exactly what happened to me. Fortunately the spear outgrew the mold and it just broke off with no spear pull. The way this thing grew this season, I can't wait until next year!

Update (& then some)
For anyone interested, the Trachy in the above posts has come through this year with flying colors to say the least. After early spring it looked like it was doomed and as of now it's still growing. Last count is 10 new fronds this year. So of course I'm happy about that and have since planted 2 add...

Trachy Dead or alive?
Hello all. First let me start with saying that I don't have any pics yet but wanted to get some opinions anyway, if possible. I have a young Trachy that's now been through 3 winters (2 easy, 1 brutal) and it looked as if it came through ok. Then recently I noticed the newest spear, which was startin...

You're not too far from me down in Maryland but I'm still a zone 7. I know you can get so many opinions on what to do and if they work, there's probably no real wrong answer but for me it's been fairly simple. I have 2 trachys in the ground with one of them in for 3 years now. As you said, the past ...

After reading these replies I think it may be wise to wait just a bit longer. I know we're supposed to have some nice warm days in the next couple (near 70F) but they have only been in the ground since early last August. I was just hoping to get them some real sunlight soon but better to be safe tha...

Time to uncover?
We've all had the benefit of a mild winter (well a good portion of us anyway) and I'm thinking of checking the 10 day forecast and if I don't see anything in the 20's for lows I'm taking the Trachy's out till next winter. 10 days from now will put us a few days into March which is what i consider sp...

Thanks to all for the detailed maps. I had no idea my 7a was so close to being a 7B (Harford County Md. just off the Chesapeake Bay). On another note, still have yet to completely cover my newly planted (August 2011) Trachy's. They've been protected fairly decently with bubble wrap around a cage and...

I believe the air temp was roughly the same as the outside mulch temp in the mid 30's to about 40 but it's just a guess at this point. I tried to keep the lights from touching anything so although i do have a few ground mounted, they are facing upwards. I do tend to think that temp isn't the most ac...

Good to hear the happy ending on your story. So thanks for sharing and also for the warning. I too have recently started using the C9 lights to provide heat which so far seem to be doing a very good job of keeping my Trachy's warm. I will make a note to check the mounting and proximity to anything f...

Well we certainly do get more winter rain than snow, unfortunately. But I was planning on providing some type of opening to give some ventilation. As far as the heat tape, I really don't know about settings but figure worst case, I can always adjust everything manually. I really don't expect to use ...

I think all this depends on whether these 2 make it through their first winter. I know with proper care they should be fine but since I'm new at this, i'm a bit more cautious. I think if they make it through ok, I will head south a bit and pick out another for the Southeast side of my house (unfortu...

I never really thought about that but now that you mention it, I agree. Anyway, I couldn't find any in my area and went through TyTy online. I believe they're from Georgia. I went through them b/c I do know someone that ordered direct through them for a Pindo and had no issues at all so they were pe...

Thanks to all for the advice. I think I'll give the Christmas light/heat tape options more consideration now. Unfortunately i don't have an outlet anywhere near this side of my house (although code says I should but that's another story). I have checked into it a bit and can probably get a new GFI i...

Proper winter care for Trachy
Hi, I've got 2 Trachy's that were planted back in early August and am wondering what the best thing to do for them for their first winter. I'm in zone 7A central/northern Maryland. I was planning in putting a wire cage around each and filling the interior with straw and tieing the fronds fairly tigh...

Hello (also) from Maryland
Hello to all.
I've been gaining valuable info from everyones posts about Trachy's and hope, with even more info, that I can get my 2 new additions through their first winter in zone 7a.
