Controlled release fertilizer

John: In my opinion, the best palm/cycad fertilizer out there is controlled-release Nutricote, made by Florikan. This has a 3-1-2 ratio of majors, and a good selection of minors in the blend. Down south you can buy it in 50 lb bags. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a distributor in the are...

Cycad mix

I'd be interested to know what others are using for a cycad mix? Here I use one basic mix for most things, and modify it a bit depending on the characteristics of the particular species that I'm growing. Standard mix (use for all Cycas, Dioon, green Encephalartos, Zamia, Ceratozamia, Bowenia, arbore...

Barb: Steve's the germination man! However... I'm not above copying some of his techniques... ;-) Here's some more pics of seedlings being potted up. This time Livistona saribus. I bought 100 seeds, and I think every one of them germinated for me last year. http://dx.eng.uiowa.edu/Upload/lsaribuscom...

Seeds on the boat

Regarding seeds on the boat - I'm not sure, I didn't try. They told us that customs charges $100/item for cuban cigars, plants/seeds, and apples from the lunch counter, though. And they keep your stuff.

Cut leaves

Barb: The trispinosus received some frost damage this winter and those leaves were cut off. All seems well this spring, though! Steve: Thanks! I guess the hunt is part of the fun. You seem remarkably successful at these guys! I have only been growing them for a year and a half, so the jury is still ...

Pinnate leaf

Hi Phil. The first pinnate leaf on my P. theophrastii was the fifth leaf from germination. All five have stayed around pretty good, although the first one is getting a bit ragged now. I've got a bunch of P. dactylifera and some canaries that will be interesting to compare to the theo - so far growth...

Howdy all! I'm a new member of this board from eastern Iowa and wanted to introduce myself. I enjoy growing most plants - and especially enjoy tropicals. Palms, cycads, heliconias and cannas are my favorites. I also have a few bananas and colocasia/alocasia. I got the bug after a visit to the Singap...
