New season rhododendrons

Hi Allen
Not sure about the pale pink one but it is a big leafer possibly of the Grande family.
The one with the bee is a R.Protistum also known as R. Giganteum and the lef directly below the flower is 20 inches long!!

Although we do get these occasional cold snaps we mostly have sun warming winter days after frosts which helps the plants to recover.

Zone 8B sounds about right to me.Mine only produces one frond a year and although I have left it out overwinter under a canopy tree I usually bring it indoors to a cool wash-house in autumn.

Would that be some kind of Oreocereus.Big plants of Oreocereus Celsianus are vet impressive a bit like big feros with hair!Oreocereus Trollii is much more woolly! Probably best in full sun to prevent etoliating Have got a small Celsianus in a pot bang up next to a sunny wall.Have an idea that ...

According to Harold Greer"s Guidebook all those pictured are hardy down to 15 fahrenheit and most to 10 f.

Eucalyptus

We have a very nice Eucalyptus Leucoxylon in back garden which gets covered in pink flowers.It also has neat peeling bark.
Here is today's snapshot.
PS unfortunately most of it now overhangs the neighbours garden!!!!!!

Hi Wes Thanks for your comments. According to Ian Barclay of Washington who you may know of, there is no exact equivalent WSDA or Western Zone equivalent to our weather. According to another we are closest to Sequim,Washington as like people there we are subject to fohn winds over high mountains ...

Phoenix Canariensis and Washy Filifera

Thanks Aaron and John for your favourable comments. The Phoenix is about 40 years old and the Filifera about 10 years old. I also have a W. Robusta which is growing fast and is possibly a couple of years younger than Filifera but looks like it might grow past the Filifera in the next couple of years ...

Always interesting to read about winter losses,however equally interesting to read about plants that looked like they made it through the winter but succumbed in spring.That really brasses me off. Any fern growers in PNW etc please leave fronds on even if they do look pretty tatty best protection ...

Really Cold

These sure are really cold temperatures.Grass minimums must be close to zero fahrenheit.
Certainly shows the effect of proximity to the sea at Vancouver to the much milder temperatures there.

In Wunderground there is a path to google personal weather stations which I just found.
Best one is Hybrid which shows local map of area and various temps.

Thanks Joe My Jubaea is about 12 inches in circumference which surprised me.However the frond lengths are no longer than a few years ago.Looks like to check they are actually getting bigger you need to put a tape measure around them! This compares with my Washy Filifera which is over 4 Ft in ...
