I have been using infrared heat emitters instead of 100 watt bulbs that can burst. Ceramic sockets are required for them though.

Trachycarpus fortunei or T. wagnerianus commonly spear pull until well established. Two friends in Tennessee tell me every one of their windmill palms spear pulled every year until they reached 4 feet in height. I would apply hydrogen peroxide into the spear area and recover.

You have multiple problems. Your potting mix is low in calcium; a fungus is attacking the soft, new growth; your potting mix is probably too wet because you have a boron deficiency.

You need a source of heat under the plastic, otherwise the temperature under the plastic will be the same as the outside air.

Santa Catarina mountain queens are the most cold hardy that I'm aware of. I grow ones from seed collected at 1,100 meters. It gets to 18F every few years and the 50-100 year lows reach 14F. I've never heard of a 'Piru' queen palm. It must have just recently popped up as a marketing ploy. Interesting...

Barb, a 10 year old Jubaea should be 5.5 feet tall. I was thinking of a good sized seedling, say 18-20 inches.

Barb, your soil is too wet. Remove the moisture holding rocks and allow the soil to dry to the point that you can barely feel any soil moisture in the peat. That is the ideal moisture level for Chamaerops.

Just add enough hydrogen peroxide to fill up the hole. If you pour too much, runoff will not damage the roots.
