First one looks like a Chamaedorea, probably Chamaedorea elegans,(Parlour Palm), which is a solitary stem. If it starts to grow suckers, then it would be Chamaedorea cataractarum. (Cat Palm)

The second one is Dypsis lutescens. (Butterfly Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Areca)

Increases Water Retention in Containerized Plant Medium,

Has been my understanding, The sand will fill in the air gaps producing a heavier potting mix. Also will cause the media to stay wet for a longer period by decreasing the porosity.
