Hawaii was originally our first choice and we were taking vacations there twice a year but it is just getting too expensive meanwhile Palm Springs is still very affordable. We also were able to buy a house rather than a condo. We will use the house there a lot more than we would if we were in Hawaii ...

Where to plant
I would plant both your sabal minor and needle in full sun as they are both heat loving palms. As far as the Tracy is concerned I would plant it anywhere other than in the wind. That would be my main concern with a Tracy. Your temps are not that bad however as they do grow in the desert they look ...

Sabal minor and Needles
Barb, I have been down to -9C once since I started recording temps and that was in 2008.. I started planting palms in 1994 and I am sure 2008 was my coldest year. That was the year we got to -9C. My last two years lows have been -4C and this winter so far -2.6C. I think that would put my last two ...

Just and update to this post. I know have four needles and three sabal minors now. My largest sabal is about four feet and has been in the ground three years. You have found the secret of growing sabal minor. Congrats! I have sandy soil which I added a bunch of compost to. I water mind frequently and I don't get really hot here. Maybe 80 to 85 as a high most of the summer but I do get really good growth on my sabal minors. I have one in full bloom right ...

Drill where the fronds start in the trunk.
You can kind of feel where that is.

Heidi, not sure what is going on with your palms. All of mine are fine and it really didn't get that cold here. Use a copper fungicide but drill a hole in the trunk so it can drain out. You just need a small hole. I would also keep the centre spear dry now and hope for warmer weather. It is bound to ...

Erik,
The pasifloria was taken last November.
My latisectus caught some kind of disease and died.
I never planted it outside.
I bought a new camera in October of last year and was experimenting with it.
I bought a macro lenses which is great for taking pictures of plants.

I grow mine from seed.
They grow quickly.
I bought my seed from Rarepalmseeds.com
I see on another discussion page that Marigold nurseries in Victoria has some good sized ones.
They are marginal here but they are hardier than capitata which has to be protected here.

Cameron, you are correct.
They are in fact two different species.
Eriospatha has proven to be much hardier in this area than capitata.
It is better suited for wetter climates also.
They come different parts of South America.
The differences also include what you have already mentioned.

I just assumed it grew everwhere.
Yours looks like it will do fine.
Will it grow to it's maximum height in your area?
Does it get hardier as it gets taller?

Aaron, all you need is to dig a hole twice as big as the root ball and fill the whole with peat moss and you have recipe for success with Rhodos.
They grow to large trees here.
They also like lots of water but not sitting in it.
Good luck.

Personally I would wait unless you know the temps will be at 50F or above. You shock them if you put them out now after two months of dry 72F weather with no direct sun. Wait until you are sure it will stay at 50F or above for long stretches to climatize them. I also agree that if it is sunny only ...

Needles have done well here so I guess the rain doesn't bother them. I think the biggest problem for both sabal minor and needles is the lack of summer heat. We barely get above 85F and they need a lot of that to grow well. They are slow growers here in Vancouver but they do survive. I checked on ...

Sabal minor and needles have proven to be hardy here.

We do have native cactus also that grows in sunny drier locations.
