Some plants seem to shed their 'outside' leaves and grow 'inside' leaves as the humidity and light levels are so different when they are in for the winter.

If the new leaves look good it sounds like it's just doing it's thing.

Such an amazing fern.

I had the opportunity to buy one this year but thought, as I'd be keeping inside, that I'd probably kill it.

Maybe I'll have to try one next year and try to give it lots of humidity.

John, you have a great micro-climate. The airport registered -8C/18F here Saturday night and -9C/16F last night. Of course my yard might not have been that bad. My yard thermometer said only -4C/25F the one night. Perhaps I need to go digital. I'd love to have a remote sensor in one of my palm areas...

Dr. Francko wrote that Sabals fry under heavy wet leaf mulch, mine sure did, but the Trachies seem to be okay and mine were. Still I think I may mix leaves and straw together or leaves and woodchips to get a bit of loft to the mix (and avoid collapse). The air pockets can only help with insulation I...

Barb, I keep throwing a garbage can over it but that won't be enough protection I'm sure. I may get wood mulch to stuff into the garbage can as well and maybe that will help. I planted it so late that I can't expect much. I'll keep the seedlings mulched with leaves. I put a bottomless pot over the S...

Time yet for winter protecton?

Generally when should I add winter protection for my Trachycarpus fortunei palms? Before the nights hit freezing?

Supposedly we'll drop to -5C/23F later this week.

Is the answer 'yesterday'?

The CNLA, lists five growers of Needle palm on the plant finder in BC. I'm really hoping they are talking about Rhapidophyllum and not just Yucca filamentosa . I've never noticed this on the site before. Great site by the way but mainly lists wholesale growers. http://www.canadanursery.com/Page.asp?...
