Ahh. This is what makes for such a great forum. You all mention enclosures. But doesn't that get a bit tricky as the tree grows? Needle Palms have the benefit of growing out more than high and therefore can be enclosed for longer. But I have to think that at some point Trachys get a bit tall. I want ...

Cutting off Fronds
It has been suggested in a 6a zone to cut off all Trachy fronds in fall with the exception of the needle, The idea is that even with protection, odds are they'll die off anyway. This apparently allows for easier and more efficient wrap. Thoughts?

Drainage my friend. Drainage. Even thirsty plants need to breathe. Almost all potted plants do best with aerated soil even when largely dormant in wintertime. Something not too compacted. As well, excess water needs to go somewhere. If you are planting outside (zone 3?) your best bet is to obtain ...

Sunshine - How much is too much?
I'd appreciate some perspectives on sun for younger Trachys. I've got a 7 gallon jobber and want to toughen it up a bit for spring planting. Usually 2 hours a day? Four? How quickly does one add more sun? Or water for that matter. Same goes for other cold hardy palms like Needles, Yuccas. How about ...

Phil, Holy Smokes! Your Musa Basjoo's are insane ! As to your question about tree stocks at Broadway...their was plenty when I bought mine of both Trachys and Needles. There weren't any Yuccas however. And thanks by the way for the warm welcome, I'm glad to be onboard. Will I try Musas next ...

Thanks Okanagan for the confirmation. I started to dab some of the spots with an alcohol-soaked Q-Tip but was concerned about missing some. These sweethearts lay between over three hundred eggs at a time. I bought Safers End-All to do a little chemical carpet bombing. OK boys, I'm goin' in!

Mould?
The 7 gallon T fortunei I just got from Broadway Gardens is showing little white spots of 'talcum powder' on the fronds and stems. The tree has been sitting in the weather since yesterday morning. Any experience with this symptom? Although I won't be planting it or the smaller needle palm I also ...

I planted 2 bamboo in the late spring. Phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis which under best conditions can grow to 26 feet with a 1.5 inch diameter culm. The other is Faresia murielae ( Umbrella bamboo ) which is a clumping type with a potentail of 15 feet and a thinner half inch diameter culm ...

Thanks Ryan I appreciate the guidance. So you're going to wrap it right up for a few months. Again, does this not affect it's sunlight processing? I'm curious about the heating cable too. Could you tell me a bit more about it. As well, will you provide a healthy dollup of mulch around the base? So ...

More Palms for Ontario? I'll Try!
Hi everyone, this is my first posting! (scattered applause) I live in Tillsonburg Ontario. Our zone is a 5b but we are within 4 or 5 kilometers of z6a. I'm not terribly familiar with microclimates but I do know that as you travel a few kilometers north of here the precip tends to increase ...
