Re: Colorado Palm

Well you have a much better chance than I would. I'm in the Denver, CO region, and I think we're zone 5B or 6. Theres actually a website from a guy in Grand Junction that grows palms. I think they are trachys. You palm nuts think a palm could survive without protection in my CO zone 7A? Would be fun...

Wal-Mart palms

I'm also seeing trachys and mediterranan fan palms labeled "cold hearty palms," even up here in the Denver, CO region

Be careful, though. Many of these palms are mislabeled. The containers labeled "needle palms" are NOT needle palms!! They are actually mediterraneans.

Wow!

This gives me a lot of encouragement, growing palms here in zone 5-6- (Denver, Colorado area).

I also recently planted a 15 gallon trachy the last couple of weeks. It shows no signs of transplant shock, and has started pushing up its spears. It was in a pot for about 3 years.

Wal-Mart palms

Here in Aurora, Colorado they have some trachys and Mediterranean Fan Palms. They are all labeled as "Cold Hearty." The funny thing is that the Trachys are labeled "Needle Palms," when they are clearly not needle palms.

Thanks!

Yes, I'm wishing for the best. I also went on craiglist and obtained some rather large yuccas for free. (My wife introduced me to Craiglist not too long ago. I had no idea people gave away plants on there!) Has anyone had good luck with craigslist regarding obtaining plants?

cold protection question (heating cables)

I'm wondering what type of heating cables are the most effective for wrapping around palms. Also, do you wrap them in the soil and around the trunk? Thanks! (Getting ideas for this winter!)

Planting the pot in the ground

I've heard this is a method to bypass transplant shock. As long as there are holes at the bottom of the pot, the roots can escape from there. I am in Aurora, Colorado, (a suburb of Denver), and plan to protect a few palms this winter which I planted, (pot and all). Just an idea.

Yuccas coming soon

I'm planning a short trip to St. George, Utah in June to purchase some nice yuccas. I have a small joshua tree allready that does extremely well here. It's even sprouting a couple of additional "arms" (for lack of a better word). I haven't even protected the joshua tree. I'll take some pic...

Hi from Aurora, Colorado

I've been a hardy palms enthusiast for many years, but after moving to Colorado, decided it was probably not worth the effort. However, I've decided to give it a shot. So I'm now back in the act! I have a 15 gallon trachy and some smaller Washies as well as one mediterannean fan palm. I figure, what...

Indoor Washy question

I have a very large Washingtonia (I think it's a Robusta) up against a window in my home. It has done extremely well in a pot over the last 4 years and has actually gained about 4 inches of trunk. It is slow to replace fronds, though, probably considering it's in a pot. I'm wondering if there are an...

Newbie here from Colorado!

I'm essentially a newbie. The last time I posted was when this forum just started a few years back! I'm planning to become an active member again considering I'm experimenting with hardy palms once again. I'm in Aurora, Colorado, what is basically a suburb of the Denver area. This spring, I decided ...
