sorry,I am low tech and don't even own a digital camera. I had the trachy in a leaf enclosure wrapped with landscape cloth. I covered it on cold nights with a trash barrel cover. I don't know about trachys , but Med. fan palms can live in pots forever. If you go on ebay now though, you will see big trachys for sale in pots that are not that large. I looked at them today.

I just uncovered my 5 gallon trachy that has been in the ground one winter. The spear is fine, but much damage to existing leaves. I am in zone 6. I was just in Fort Lauderdale last week and the local Target (!) had wonderful 7 gallon Bismarkias for $40. Wow!

It has been in this pot for about 8 years. I trim the roots every few years and repot. If I could find a GREAT home for it , I would donate it.

luky one, I feel your pain. I have a 7 1/2 foot med. fan palm (chamaerops humilis) that I have owned for 38 years. I t is currently in a 24" pot and I can barely move it now.

same thing happened to me on my waggie and two regular trachys after a cold winters night in an enclosed sunroom. it is pushing out very small fronds.

zone for is really pushing the zone for trachycarpus. This is what we do I guess. good luck and protect the hell out of it this winter

i have been following our great new weather scroll all winter on this site. I ss now how Vancouver can grow these wonderfull trachys. They may not have the best all around weather all tear, but those warm winter temps are great. The prolonged cold we had in the eastern Canada and new england areas ...

we only see low temps like that once or twice a year in Boston and vicinity. I am about thirty miles north of Boston, but still on the coast, so we stay warmer than inland areas. I am in zone 6 and Boston is 6b because of it's density of buildings.

barrie, wesure have been lucky so far in New England. The lowest temp so far has been 27.f since december. I am in zone six andthats pretty good. You are right though, the cold is moving eastward, and next wednesday should see lows of 10f. No snow yet though.

desertdave, were these trachys planted as large palms or were they grown there? how many years have they been at this spot? They look so exposed with no wind protection from buildings. Keep us posted, it encourages all us zone pushers.
