is there any way we can get an increase in file size we can upload? i used to use photobucket and now they don't allow hosting unless you're a paying member... and uploading it directly here i'm told a 5.9 mb file is too big....

Re: Got them enclosed just in time today.

Just figured I would update my thread here. My three trees are still going strong here in West Michigan. My largest seeded again this year! Last year it didn't, so I have thousands of seeds that will be clipped off soon before I put them away. This is the first year I will be changing my covering te...

Re: Will these seed be viable?

So just an update, I have over 100 seedlings sprouting from this batch so evidently they are viable! I actually sowed them a few different ways and funnily enough, the method where I didn't do anything other than throw the seeds right into the dirt and barely covered them seemed to be the best way t...

Re: What happened here?

I think there's just not many people looking for info to grow palms in colder climates... I posted this past summer asking questions about the seeds my palm was putting out and the viability of them and no one replied with answers for me (that I recall).

Re: Will these seed be viable?

So I had to cut off my seed branches (or whatever you call them) when I covered the trees up for the winter. They've sat in my garage for a couple weeks now and I noticed they're starting to dry and get a little wrinkled. Any idea what I want to do at this point for planting them? I've cleaned off a...

Re: Got them enclosed just in time today.

Quick update on winter storage. I managed to cover everything yesterday without having to add any new barrels this year so I have two trees that are 3 55 gallon barrels tall and my largest at 4 barrels. The largest is maxed out this winter and I am starting to think about how tall I will reasonably ...

Will I see a color change to note that they're ready to pick? I recall the ones I got from another tree that germinated were brown.... these clearly are quite green yet.

Will these seed be viable?

Can anyone tell me if these seeds will be viable? This is the first year my efflorescence has produced seeds. I have three trees in my yard in Michigan, and the other that's doing this is the same. The third didn't produce anything this year. Wondering if I'm lacking the other sex that these won't p...

Great to see you got them covered in time. At some point do you think you will start to hurricane cut them(to a degree) to limit growth? That's certainly a thought... but at the rate mine go they only put up 5-8 fronds each year. I figure on my oldest and largest I can put another drum on the botto...

Got them enclosed just in time today.

Going on my second year of the drum protection method. These are the three I have left, I lost one that was not located by these which I think do well because they are by my pond which creates a micro-climate. I've got one 65 watt floodlight near the crown, fronds are wrapped in frost cloth and on t...

The slits in the drums give a ton of ventilation. At the top I have the top slit horizontally half way around the top and it's only covered with a tarp. Need some helpful advice

Long story short. You've all seen my stacked barrels I am using for protection this year. Each barrel has a couple landscape stake lights inside, one in the ground facing up and one about three feet up near the crown and tied into a thermocube. All in I have 8 lights on one 20 amp circuit and that i...

Photo from tonight. 3 of my drums I think need to have the thermocube moved closer to the lights. One is dialed in perfectly. The black vertical lines are the slits I cut up each barrel set to open up and wrap around the palms. Then there's 1/2 inch pipe insulation to help seal the opening once I pu...

Finally the tree I had the longest decided to put out inflorescence. What it's putting out looks nothing like the inflorescence that my other two trees put out last spring. How bout if you used the barrels, split down the middle, but glued fiberglass house insulation inside them? Like R13 or R19 fiberglass and 3M spray adhesive to hold it in place?
