mini christmas lights
I'm curious, do mini christmas lights do any good for heat? I see lowes has them on sale for 1.88 with free store pick up.... if so, I may stock up for the future.

I had that same concern when I initially wrapped my windmill's trunks with c-9 strings, I kept wondering about the bark/fuzz getting too hot and combusting. I eventually went to hanging the lights around the trunk but not allowing the lights to touch the tree. So far I'm maintaining above freezing t...

WHEW! I don't know if I want anymore palms after what I went through finalizing my two boxes.... :-D Palm number two is insulated and enclosed and both are now covered in plastic and shrink wrapped as best I could (palm #1's box is tight against my handrail so fitting a shrink wrap roll through is n...

yes, each has a temp sensor. I am a bit confused so far, obviously it's warm today, and there's only a 1 degree difference between the two this afternoon between the open one and the closed one.... We'll see how things change once the lights start coming on again. I don't know if you have a Save-a-l...

Insulated and closed up one box today. I haven't put final plastic wrap on it yet as highs will get to 36 through Tuesday yet. I'm going to do the second one Monday after work. I'm curious how different temps will be between the two for a couple days. Went real nice with my new impact driver! The in...

It looks great as far as I can tell. I just bought a 200watt fluorescent bulb to put up over it to give it some full spectrum light during the day since my windows are on the North side. Trying to keep from putting it in a little used front bedroom that faces south. http://i1204.photobucket.com/albu...

grow light for mexican fan palm
Anyone have a recommendation on a grow light to use with a mexican fan palm I will be getting this week? It's not practical for me to put this in a south facing window at my house. So I'm thinking a North window with a grow light. Can anyone point me in a good direction to go?

But to answer your questions I sometimes give the palms plenty of protection frost cloth-burlap-bubble wrap silver insulation and mulch and sometimes nothing and they still pull thru I made a video ...

How do mexican fan palms do indoors?
I'm thinking of buying a few smaller palms for inside the house to keep that tropical feeling alive through the winter months and thinking a Mexican Fan palm would be perfect. I've had certain palms indoors before and they were messy in that there was some sort of fallout that fell out onto the carp...

Great video, next time or when you box up, I would be interested in seeing your boxes a bit closer. It looks like you just have two inch styrofoam sheets and duct taped them together or do you have some sort of nails/fasteners? So long as I don't kill mine this winter, next spring I'm on the lookout...

anyone do a traveler palm in zone 7 or under?
I was just looking at this palm and it looks pretty cool, read that it can tolerate temps down to 20 degrees and of course it has me thinking if it's possible to get one through a midwest winter with protection. Anyone half experience with one where they had to box it up? Share any experiences!

Mike, in watching one of your older vids when you had the boxes up and were checking on the palms, it looked like inside of your styro box the palm was wrapped in plastic. Is that how you do yours? Pull all the fronds up, wrap with plastic and then put your fluorescents in between the plastic wrap a...

Tim, A child's delight is the only good thing about it... showing a pretty consistent 44 degrees Above freezing, save your electricity. I've been making sure my thermocubes are working before the full wrap when I won't be able to see much. I was out fortifying my huts a bit more to keep mine as dry as I could before I wrap with plastic in a few weeks. Interesting that as I'm watching tonight outside temps are in the 30's but in my hut in the middle of all my Christmas lights it's showing a pretty consistent 44 degrees. And the huts ar...

Re: Nice Hut Barb
Wow that looks like it is a lot of work . Your zone seems cold for B.C. Are you as cold as Montreal. If not you surely can make easier structures . Big job but GREAT job CoconutMike Mike, when you make your boxes, how much are foam vs frame? or do you have some that are just all foam held together ...

Re: Fan Palm
I will use styrofoam box and lights- I have not decided what type of lighting yet although it will require more protection than trachycarpus Keep this thread updated on that if possible. I would love to know it's possible to keep one in Michigan. Out of curiosity, how windy is it by you? You appear...
