Nah
No, you're not nuts, but I wouldn't purchase anything larger than 15 gallons in case it doesn't work out. I've heard of people planting windmill palms in cold areas as cold as zone 5. So I say go for it- just plant it against a south facing wall - protection in a good microclimate

impressive!
I'd like to see some of these New Zealand palms! Try to post some pictures. I never really knew what the climate was down there.

keep us informed!
We'll all have to keep one another informed when cold weather hits - perhaps we could help keep each other's plants alive with our mutual ideas! Luckly, where I live, it's pretty rare to go below zero F, so hopefully that will help!

cacti for palms
I have a large amount of prickley pear cacti native to my area, but few local palm sources. (I'm looking to build up on my palm collection). For anyone that is interested in swapping some cacti for palms (or palm seeds) let me know here or in my email.

Italian Cyprus
I'm curious as to how many of you are currently growing these? I find them quite hardy! I have a small one in my yard, and it's growing quite well. It went through our last winter here in northern Utah (7a) quite well, with our 2.5F low with minimal protection.
