Welcome ! I'm north of Salina, KS, been down to -12F so far this winter. Have a robusta and a Trachy in ground, a basic shelter of 1/2 foam board on a wood frame, so far so good :D http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2871/10445977043_a8fb0d9248.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3787/10445659915_dae6684ff3...

Update..........

The shelter has worked well, but has grown too small. Been setting it up on cinder blocks the past two winters for extra height.
I'll build a lighter one this year.......... The old one now serves here :D

Cycadguy - Thanks for the advice! It would have made things easier if I had cut down further, was just being careful and a little reluctant :D I did flow flow the pollen all the way around until it was dripping out the bottom, fairly sure of good coverage. Canadianplant - Good luck with your seeds!

With luck and if the pollination was successful, the cone should start to enlarge as the seeds form.

Using the "wet method" for pollination, which is just mixing the pollen with distilled water. It is applied all the way around the center of the cone. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7939578682_670606847a_z.jpg If well done, the excess will be dripping out the open scales on the bottom ...

It seems the easiest method it to cut the top of the cone open to gain access to the ovules. I could have cut down deeper, just being cautious. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8305/7939591458_1011810647_z.jpg This is the area the pollen needs to reach, http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8170/7939583186_7c2...

Hand Pollination of Dioon edule

My Dioon edule is coning this year, and to my luck it is a female 8) Here is my attempt at hand pollination, Thanks to Tom Broome for rushing me the pollen! Also for his excellent article on hand pollination which can be found here, http://cycadjungle.8m.com/cycadjungle/Hand-Pollination%20of%20Cycad...

Barb, Nice size caudex on yours, I don't fertilize much, usually just re-pot every 2-3 years.
