If the 3 leafs are still intact, pull one down and see if the leaf base pulls away very easliy from the trunk. If it does, it's a goner. If it doesn't pull away from the trunk at all, you might be alright. Also, If you can take the tree by the trunk and easily shake it out of the soil, it means you ...

Erik, To me, it seems the larger Sago's take about a year in ground to properly establish themselves. It might be worthwhile to find a couple larger containers to leave them in year round, or maybe pot plant them each year so a basic rootball is left intact. Wes, (Kansas), does that each year. Have...

Sable Minor, Undoubtably, hardiest
We had the coldest Winter here in Northern Kansas that we have had in at least 7-8 years. I planted IN THE GROUND, a Sable Minor 3 Winters ago, on the South West side of the house. I figured this Winter would be the lastsince it was the coldest in recent memory. However, I just checked and there is ...

I finally removed most all foliage. Spring appears to have sprung here. Dean, do me a favor. Go to a local Dairy or Beef farm and kindly tell the owner what you have going, and ask him for a little 5 gallon bucket full of 2-3 year old manure. Take that and put about 3/4lbs of it around your Sago. W...

Everything back in the Greenhouse
With Temps now in the high 50's and lows not below frezzing for a few days, I wanted to get everything brought from the basement and put in the greenhouse so I can get a head start on Flushing. Before I put them in the basement, I cut a lot of leaves off, hoping that it would help early flushes. Wel...

Looking for a donation- Butia
My favorite palm is the Butia.
I know these grow like weeds in some parts.
My Butia has decided to go ahead and get spear pull and it is a goner.
Does anybody have a/couple "weeds" that they would like to dig up and send my way

For those of you that are like me and bring your cycads inside for the Winter, I wait to bring them in until the first cold snap browns the leaves. Then I bring them in, let them set inside for 3-4 weeks, then I cut the leaves off. IMO this allows the plant to save some energy and get ready for the ...

I am SOOOOO stopping with Palms and just collecting Cycads now. First week in Jan and I have lost many many palms, yet my cycads seem to have been alright. I cut the leaves off all my Kings in hope that will stimulate new growth this Spring with my manure help in March. My Willy's have not skipped a...
Yes, it would look WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! I tell you, the Willy are my absolute favorite. THey do the best for me and I LOVE the combination of the white trunk and long leaves. I thought of you earlier this week when the Weather Channel was in your town showing the strawberry freezing. I told my wife...

Steve, I need you advise then. I need to bring it inside for the Winter. And I know I will need to repot it in new soil, but I have a couple questions (for everybody too) I am scared to repot it now because I have killed many of plants after repotting. Is now a good time to do it? If I repot, will t...
Well sad to say, with my girl, I have neglected the old greenhouse a bit more than I have before. Most everything looks good, but WOW, Steve, you would not believe the Ficus Bengal that you gave me. Has tripled in size in one year. And oddly enough, it has grown A LOT the last couple months since it...

OK you 5B'ers I have proof we can grow Palms
I know it's not setting the world on fire with growth rate, but this Sabal Minor has been IN THE GROUND for 3 Summers and 2 Winters and is doing just fine. Starting it's first fan leaf. The Winters in Topeka the last 2 years have been BRUTALLY cold with major Ice Storms. This is on the South side of...

Of the 5 King seeds I brought home one year ago from Lake City (earlier in the thread), 1 rotted, 2 have not popped, 1 is sproated and sending out it's tap root, and the other has rooted and is shooting it's starter leaf as I type this. This is very exciting since I SUCK at seed germinating and thes...
