Kansas' Front Yard pic 5/1/2008
Here is my front yard. Hard to tell, but there are actually two "Madagascar Palms" in front of the Yucca. They Yucca BTW is still hanging on to leaves that died this Winter so it looks scraggly. Middle there is a Dioon Edule and beside it a Revoluta. On the side is my "Snowball Verban...

These are VERY VERY tempermental palms. They are almost like a human in their mood swings. I would say yours are doing fine. I wouldn't water them any more than you already are as what OPPalm was refering to was when it is in bright unfiltered sun is when it needs LOTS of water. What you need to do ...

Steve, I am getting a bunch of these from that kind lady in Florida that has been giving me seeds from her yard. I tell you what, these seeds are as fresh as they come as they are picked, then pushed into an envelope and sent. I have had TREMENDOUS luck with her seeds. She is so great! I'll keep you...

The first one, the center spear was just barely visable. It was not showing hardly anything. In fact, you can kinda see where it is black, then the green starts, thats where it was before Winter. The second one (Desert Zone) has REALLY showed some ups. It too was barely visable, and there was no sig...

I learned this spring while I had the top open on the shelter and the heat cables turned off, that the reflected heat from the stucco wall of the house increased the temperature in the shelter by 5* to 20* depending on the number of hours of sun and the amount of cloud cover. That would be at least...

THANK YOU MR. GLUMMY GUS!!!! :D This is the coldest Winter we had in the last 10 years here in Topeka. However, I agree, and I think I may have to at least throw a trsh can over them next year if I want to keep good growth. I know there is a guy in Wichita Kansas that has HUGE Louisiana's, but not s...

HUGE findings for North Palm growers
Well at least I personally think it is... I have done it myself and can now positivly state that Palms CAN make it in Kansas or in other Zone 5 WITH OUT PROTECTION! Last year I planted a Sabal Minor that I got from "Desert Zone", and I also planted a Minor that I got from "Laaz",...

Yes, first Sabal Minors DO LOVE unfiltered, hot sun. And second those in the pics are definatly NOT Sabal Minor but rather Med Fan (chamaerops humilis) and yes, even in a zone 5, we can pick those up at Wal Mart for $20.00 here too. If you say you would like to get $100 for those, I first would have...

Ah, the football and baseball bat. My sons are the best, but they leave their stuff outside all the time when it rains. If we are in a drought, all I need to do is tell them to go play outside and then it will rain after they leave the stuff out. That is my backyard, and my BIGGEST PET PEEVE of all ...

CrabApple trees
These started blooming a couple days ago. But with todays constant, steady heavy mist, light rain, the blooms have REALLY opened up today. Sorry bout the stuff in the yard, but I wanted to take a pick and didn't want to walk outside in the rain to take it. http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/To...

Lemme know Wes in about a month (or less) if it worked. These three were kept all Winter in a cold cold garage in a wodden box with light on them constantly, but again, it was very cold. I brought them in and watered them with some manure and in month I had this. When I put it on, I also water the h...

Anybody grow PineApple from store bought
Has anybody else done the ole PineApple from the top method. I started this one about a year and a half ago. It has not put out a fruit yet, but I really couldn't care less as I just like the way it looks regardless of fruiting.

I was looking for stuff that grows wild in Kansas to send to a friend. I wanted to send some stuff that grew well in Kansas. This thing was growing in an understory of tall cedar trees in field. Now this thing was just dug up and it had to have survived teens temps as it was pretty big and it has no...

Barrie, just to let you and maybe get your expectations booming, I know a guy in Wichita, Kansas that grows these on the South faceing wall. THEY ARE HUGE! The leaves in August are at least 5' long and the trunks are about 3' out of the ground. THey are amazing, and in Wichita, kansas no less. I bet...

I can tell you this, the person who planted that tree, planted it WAY too close to the house. The spread on that when it gets bigger will be at least 5' at the very least. And with the growth rate of a Tait, that could be as soon as 2-3 years. I think these have the growth rate of a Taitungensis and...

Yes, The Pumila started coning last Summer, just weeks after potting up after I got it from Mr. Chumley. It stalled during the Winter, but has started growing again with the humidity and warmer temps. Here it is, kinda hard to see I know, especially the one with no leaf, but it is there and it is gr...

How to transplant a Yucca
I have many wild yucca where I live and would like to dig some up. I dug one up this week but the tap root goes down so deep, I can not get it all (they are in sold rock) and I had to cut the root with my shovel. With the root being cut with a shovel, how do I transplant it and have it work, or is i...
