I read somewhere I could spray a weak bleach solution on the seeds...maybe I'll have to try that.

Moldy seeds-need urgent advice
Hello all, First of all, thanks for any and all replies! I decided to start some Date Palm seeds in a small container with Perlite, and a desk lamp for heat. Well, during this time I found some really old, moldy, disgusting seeds I collected years ago. To my amazement, a few of these old seeds actua...

Well, they're definitely DEAD. The Butia I was pretty sure was dead, but decided to try and trunk cut it...the whole thing popped right off of the roots. The Trachy I wasn't too sure of, it actually looked OK but I decided to trunk cut that too...the rot was all the way down to the roots. Th...

Trachy and Butia capitata left outside Zone 5
Hi, First of all, thank you for any and all reply's. It's been awhile since I've been on here; At one point I had 5 different palms, but I managed to kill them all except for 2....until now that is (maybe). I have a small Trachy and a small Butia capitata that have been outside all of November and D...

Update
Figured I should post an update- I transplanted the Washy, and after 2-3 months it has TAKEN OFF. It is growing rapidly in full sun. Barb, I think you were exactly right It was very compacted and root bound, combo of the trip home from SC, then placing it in full sun- It was getting choked out with ...

Bugs/Worms in roots of Butia?
My butia has been starting to brown lately, and I figured it was because it was root bound. However, when I got it out of the pot it wasn't all that bad, and all these worms and bugs fell out of the root ball? I've never seen this before...the bugs almost looked like termites except I don't believe ...

Outer fronds dying on W. Robusta
I went outside to transplant my new Washingtonia robusta, and I noticed all of the outer fronds are drooping down and turning brown. At first I thought it was because some outer ones do die, but now the only thing left is the 2 main spears. I also noticed some of the roots at the very bottom are dry...

Andy, I really think a big Trachy is far and away your best bet for a trunked palm. I did manage to keep one of two untrunked Sabal mexicana alive in the ground during -30 C in February, 2011, but it was not at all easy and the poor thing was defoliated. Meanwhile a trunked Trachy nearby with cover...

There are many cold hardy palms out there! Sabal palmettos are supposably cold hardy into the teens, but it doesn't seem like to many people on the forums have that type or try to overwinter them. I'd like to see it done, go for it! There's a writeup on Wikipedia for cold hardy palms, alot of good i...

Barb- I have no idea, I did have to climb a small hill to get up to the palm. I know I've seen more pictures of Palms with those same exposed roots, so maybe it's OK? I'll have to do more research on that. I know the big Maples and Oaks around here have huge exposed roots at the bottom that you are ...

Myrtle Beach, SC Palms
W and I took a road trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. This state just LOVES there Sabal palmettos and Butia capitata! Those two palms are the ONLY ones they plant. (Aside from Cycads, and a few Trachys here and there). Everyones cars had a sticker of the Sabal palmetto, the state flag has one, our hotel was...

Copper fungicide question
I went to HD today and bought some Liquid Copper Fungicide by "Southern AG". (I know it may very well be dead, but it can't hurt to try anything). It doesn't seem to have any directions? :? Some of the labels on the bottle were torn off, so I got one at the back of the shelf- It still has ...

I think I lost my Trachy
After such a MILD MILD start to the winter, I left my Trachy out a bit too long..It saw single digits and possibly 0 F unprotected. Of course it had spear pull, but only after I pulled on the center spear for the 2nd time. I thought well that was dumb! You pulled too hard and of course the spear wil...

Cameron, Canadianplant (sorry I don't know your name) thanks for the info. I heard that flood/sinkhole/hurricane insurance has tripled! And also thats jobs down there are scarce, and don't pay well. Florida v South Carolina?
As a "palm lover" Florida would be heaven for me!! I've always loved Florida, been there a few times, etc. It was just a dream to move there, as I have children in this state, family, friends, etc. Until me and the W were talking the other day, somehow moving to another state came into our...

Parlor palm spear pull
Hi, I've had my Parlor Palm on my front porch all summer, with the windows closed except for one cracked open a bit. I have a Trachy, 2 Sagos, and a Majesty out there-my makeshift "greenhouse" reaches temps into the mid 90s F. Well I've been working all summer (40 hrs a week v my usual 20)...

Today me and the W were driving and I saw atleast 10 palms tree's surrounding a yard. In shock, (we are in Massachusetts) I'm like ARE THOSE PALM TREES?! They were as tall as the house they were next too, much much taller than me. We turned around and it turns out this place is a local Landsca...

My front porch-Perfect Greenhouse?
So if you have been following my posts, I have my Trachy on my front porch (of an apartment buidling), and I used to have ALL the front windows open to make it the same temp as outside, since I can't plant anything outdoors. Well my landlord complained and wants all of them closed... Now, I'm realiz...

Maybe they meant for use in concrete plants sorry, couldn't resist that one! It may not be concrete, but it sure does feel like it! Is it doomed now because of the sand? I know Trachys hate to stay saturated for a long time. What do you use for soil? Do you just mix your own? Or do you mix stuff in...
