Thanks everyone. Its making more sense to me now. Thank you Jim for an explanation that I could grasp. TerdalFarm, I suppose I could, but I never have noticed any dead sabals out there so that probably says a lot in and of itself. If I ever do decide to ferilize my palms......it will be spaghetti an...

Robreti, thanks for your comments. (alternating thaw and freeze will break the cells and the rain/snow infiltrates to the body...), And probably more so in the southeast U.S. than most places.....which is strange because trachys do well there. So I still have to wonder about that one????? Heres anot...

Didnt mean to sound impatient. I just got to thinking how some things just dont add up, thats all. Ive probably read 10000 posts about spear pull etc., and its always the same scenario. Then someone always says to keep the spear dry. WHY? Does fungus really grow when air temps are below freezing? I ...

Thanks for everyones insight. Ok Im gonna stick with my original thought proccess.......Im just going to assume that nobody really knows what causes a living tree to start rotting on the insides. Water maybe? Im not going to buy that. Since when is bad for a tree to get wet? They live outside. I jus...

Ok that article was a little more than my brain can comprehend at the moment. The question still remains though. They say soil born pathogens. Like I even know what that is. How did these pathogens get in the soil in the first place? Why dont they cause rot in other plants that are planted less than...

So why is it that larger, well established trachys arent as prone to spear pull/fungus as younger ones? I mean its all the same stuff up inside the crown right?............a spear and some water. I can understand the larger tree handling more cold, but when it comes to water getting in the crown, wh...

I think you need to bite the bullet and get some plywood. Build some boxes you can use year after year. Tie them down right and you wont have to worry about them blowing away, or having the plastic sheeting get shredded. Its probably cheaper in the long run. Also if you happen to get a foot of snow,...

trachy seeds
Will a female trachy produce seeds even if their is no male tree in the area? If so, I would assume they would not be viable. Is this correct?

Jim, bacon, lettuce, and egg sandwiches. Probably a Canadian thing. :? As for broad leaf evergreens, magnolias are hard to beat. Im trying 'alta' this year. Supposedly hardy to -10f. Also growing little gem, teddy bear, and the classic grandiflora (the biggy). Gunnera and paulownia......killer leave...

Jims right on the money about transplanting s. minor. I dug one up about two years ago and put it in my yard, I think its grown maybe an inch since then. Not worth it. Better off just collecting seeds, which I did. As far as I know its a natural stand. Its on both sides of the road, and Ive walked a...

If they are, then they must be some of the tallest Ive ever seen.

Erik, your right. Im gonna have to do some driving if I hope to find a brahea. Id rather do that than mail order anyways. I think I'll wait till spring though cause the chances of finding one will probably be better. Im anxious to try a w. robusta here as well, so maybe I can kill two birds with one...

Canadianplant, I still had the plant tag for that palm. It says cerifera, but I dont always trust the tags. I think it probably is though. It was exposed to a couple night of 10f. Those first pics dont really do it justice. Here are some better ones of the newer leaves. Maybe they just get more blue...

Are they saying the colors are similar? The Armatas look very silvery to me. Heres what my Med. fan palm looked like in Feb. 2010 (first pic). Second pic was taken about a month ago. http://i820.photobucket.com/albums/zz128/bamboo99/008-3.jpg http://i820.photobucket.com/albums/zz128/bamboo99/053.jpg

anyone growing brahea armata?
Im thinking of trying this next year, that is if I can find one. From what Ive read they are hardy to around 15f. Can anyone back this up?
What are some reputable mail order nurseries? I have no experience with mail order and Im skeptical about it.

Here are some rather crude versions. A little outdated, but I think they show typical patterns.
