Wes North Vancouver, Thankyou! Actually, my Trachy hasn't spent a Southern Illinois winter in the ground yet. I recently planted it on April 16 of this year. I purchased my Trachy as a 5 gallon sized specimen back in November of 2004. It overwintered in the house (Trachy's make great house plants by ...

Big Dog, If the spots you are referring to are "shell like," you could have a scale problem. Scale is a tiny parasite about the size of the head of a pen (about the size of a chigger), that lives underneath the brown shell--which looks like a spot. If so, you can rub alcohol on each individual spot ...

Now that winter is long gone, I can tell you that I was 100% successful this winter. With a very, very rare z6b low of -2F back in December, my new Sabal minor and Rhapidophyllum hystrix's were put to the test from the get-go! Well I can tell you doubters of S. minor and R. hystrix hardiness, there ...

I have tried many different methods in order to protect my palms from the coldest winter nights. I have finally came up with one of the best methods I have ever tried. What I'm going to build uses PVC pipe and connectors, 1/8" plastic and stakes. Why hadn't I thought of it before. After reading ...

I'm going to buy some Trachy's this spring, as well as some more Musa basjoo, Cacti, and I'm planning on trying a Live Oak. I know ...

Well Rick, the most cold hardy trunking palm, is the Trachycarpus fortunei(Chinese Windmill Palm). It is a zone 7b palm, cold hardy to 5F. Its probably not going to grow in zone 6b, for long term anyway. Its worth a try though, but the palm would need advanced protection!...Trachy's are popular in ...

Sabal palmetto grows very fast in the southeastern U.S., especially in Florida, where it can reach up to 40ft(13m) tall. the S. palmetto is very common in the southern U.S. along with Butia capitata(Pindo Palm, Jelly Palm). Soil and Fertilizer for Palms and Desert plants
Good, well draining soils for palms, cycads, and desert plants like cacti, yuccas, agave, and succulents, is either peat or spaghnum moss. Spaghnum moss is very loose and "airy." Its great for seed germinating too. If one is going to plant some cacti or some type of desert plant, it would be a good ...

Nice to meet you Ian. I'm curious, do you experience hot humid weather during the summer in your area?...I know your pretty far from the equator, so I was wondering how much direct sunlight you get? Purple Passion Flower(Passiflora incarnata)
The Passion Flower is cold hardy throughout zones 6-10. It is very invasive here in zone 7, but dies back to the ground every winter. Most people think a Cycad is a type of palm tree. Thats a common misconception, a Cycad is closely related to a conifer. The Cycad is in no way similiar to a palm tree besides the pinnate appearence of its leaves. Cycads were around over 250 million years ago, way before palm trees came around. The ...

Butia capitata(Pindo Palm, Jelly Palm)
Butia capitata is sometimes know as the "Pindo Palm," or the "Jelly Palm." The Jelly palm is quite cold hardy growing well into zone 8. The Pindo Palm can grow as far north as the Virginia Capes. It is unusual, because the Jelly is a pinnate leaf palm. There are 2 types of palms, palms with pinnate ...
